Why We Get Fat And What To Do About It, by Gary Taubes

  • I am extremely impressed by Gary Taubes' new book, published on 12/28/10,
"Why We Get Fat And What To Do About It"

I found his 2007 book, Good Calories Bad Calories,
which was written for medical professionals,
interesting but extremely difficult to read, and pre-ordered this
since it was written for the average, intelligent person.

I got it in the week between Christmas and New Years,
and it contained just the concepts that I needed for encouragement.
Personally, I think that everyone would benefit from reading it,
not necessarily because they should change the way they eat,
but for the history and presentation of past dieting research,
and for more knowledge of how our bodies work to lose fat.

I'm planning to experiment with the concepts to see if they work for me.
I'd love to be able to maintain my weight while eating more than 1050 daily calories.
  • Thanks for the heads-up, BrightAngel! I'm going to put it on hold at my library if they have it. If not, they'll usually order something that seems to be a benefit to many. Looking forward to delving into it!
  • GCBC was one of the most life changing books I've ever read. Truly. I've ordered his new one and am looking forward to reading it and sharing it with others. We'd love to have you join us over on the Paleo/Primal thread. I can't get over how good I feel eating this way! And, yes, the best part is how I am finally NOT hungry!!!!
  • I saw this in Borders yesterday and starting skimming through it. It does look good; I'm going to reserve it at the library.

I hope it works out for you!
  • I'm still waiting for it to arrive... it should show up tomorrow.
  • I very much appreciated the info in GC,BC. Please come back and post your opinions of this next book
  • I got this book last week and I have already read it TWICE! Yes, I am a bookworm but, still . . . Fascinating. I have read a lot of the backlash against Gary Taubes' premise but none of it has made me doubt what he says. In my life, sugar and high-carb processed food makes me fat, sick, tired and constantly hungry. I have been trying various low cal and low fat diets over the past 30 years! The only time I had weight loss that lasted longer than six months was where I did NOT eat chips, potatoes, bread, sugar, candy, baked goods etc. I had lost fifty pounds that way but I lost focus & started eating junk, sugar and high-carb meals again - leading to fat me!

    Great book
