How did you decide your goal weight?

I was just wondering how you came up with your goal weight. I've seen people around my height and current weight that are at their goal weight. I've seen people around my weight and height with goals that are much lower than mine. We all have different frames, body types, and ideal weights, so it's no wonder that we all have different goals.

For me, I'm a number freak, so I figured out the exact midpoint of the healthy BMI scale which is 21.7. For my height, to have a BMI of 21.7, I need to weigh 145lbs. That sounds like a good weight to me. It's lighter than I ever remember being (I was 150lbs in 5th grade!), but I think it's an attainable and legitimate goal for me. I never plan on being supermodel thin, but I do want to be lean...something I've never been before.

Just curious...it's obviously a very personal process, and I admire anybody that chooses a goal and achieves it, no matter what it is!
  • Hi! I used to weight 145 lbs. in high school and I figured that would be a bit low for me. I have weighted 150 lbs. quite recently so I think it's something attainable. I will be very happy to be between 145 and 155 lbs., so like you, I kind of decided on the middle number.

The thing that's frustrating for me is that I have a big bottom and when I go to buy jeans, I end up needing a larger size than someone of my weight/height, which ends up making me feel huge, even if I'm not. Moral of the story (sorry I got off topic)....avoid buying jeans!
  • Funny you should ask this. I was looking at your goal weight in comparison to mine (we're the same height) and it made me think about how folks choose their goal weights. :-)

My Healthy Weight begins at 167 (or 164 depending upon the chart) and I pretty much wanted to be within the Healthy Weight Range...but, not super skinny! I figured 160 was a nice solid number. :P
  • Good question. I think goal weights really depends on your height/body type. For me I have a medium body frame and my ideal weight should be somewhere from 130-144. I picked 135 as sort of the middle, but as long as I'm within +/- 5lbs of that number I'll be happy. That's also about how much I weighed in high school at my lowest. But if as I get closer to my goal it might change, after all my body is not the same as it was 10 years ago so now my ideal weight may be a bit more. I'm just going to take it one step at a time and deal with that issue when it comes up.
  • I picked 135 cuz it's in the healthy weight range of my BMI. Once I hit that goal (or get near it) I will re-assess. I may stick with that number, stay higher, or even go lower. At this point I can't tell what will work for my body. I remember being 150 in high school and being curvy- so 135 seemed to be a fitting number.
  • I also picked my goal weight based on the BMI scale and it's also the lie I've been telling on my driver's license for about 15 years, now. But I used the BMI more than anything.
  • I don't have a goal weight. It's been so long since I've even been close that I just have no idea how to guess what the number will be. I have a sort of mental model of what I want to feel like, and I think I'll know when I get there.

If you press me for a numerical goal, I'll say it's to get down below 25% body fat, rather than defining a goal weight. Even then, I'll see how I look and feel before I decide whether I'm at goal.
  • My goal weight chose me. I wanted to be 135. I still lost weight after picking up my eating a bit. Next came 125 then 115. Now I range between 115 and 122 and I'm ok with this. I still watch what I eat but am not afraid of an occasional sweet or cheat.
  • I picked mine because the lowest recorded weight I remember myself being was 167. Mind you I have a horrible memory of anything before I was 16, but that's a different story altogether. I found a healthy weight for my height would be below 164 and 161 sounded good since it would put me at an exact 60lb loss so I put that. When I get there, if I feel I can still lose, I will... but for now I'm aiming for that. Also, I'm very muscular... not grossly so, but my body is very solid so I doubt I will get much lower than 160 or so.. although I have to admit that the 150's sounds mighty nice!!
  • My goal weight is what I used to weigh when I was 18-21. Looking at old pictures, I really liked the way I looked. I still have old clothes that seem sooo small! I may re-evaluate then, I definitely want to be more toned than I was back then.
  • This time last year I was about 130. I remember wanting to be like 105-110. That seems like so much to me, so I made it 115 for a 40 pound weight loss. I've never been below 120, so idk how I'm going to look. If I still think I could lose a few pounds, I'll probably aim for about 110 or so
  • I'm not sure what my bmi is but I'd like to weigh close to my early 20's weight, 124lbs. I was never a skinny adult, I like my curves so I'll keep them.
  • Initially, I aimed for and hit 162...the weight that would give me 5 lbs of wiggle room and still keep me in a normal BMI.

Once I got there, I learned that it wasn't at that time sustainable for me...the calorie intake it took to maintain that weight was such that I didn't have enough energy for my workouts, and I didn't want to compromise on those, especially considering that activity level is a much better predictor of health than BMI alone. I am larger-framed, and carry a lot of muscle, so in my "overweight" BMI where I currently sit, I wear a size 8 and have a healthy waist measurement.
  • It's been trial and error for me. I've altered my goal a few times. I had a goal somewhere in the 140s, and couldn't reach it, so I plateaued in the low 150s for awhile. I was still unhappy with having more fat on my stomach than I liked, so I eventually got more active and ate more cleanly - and I reached my goal range of 132-139.

I go for a slim but curvy look, basically I don't want to have more than a small pooch when I'm sitting.
  • I picked 165 because 166 was the lowest I've been as an adult. At the time, I thought I could still stand to lose about 15-20 pounds. 165 would be a BMI of 22.4. 150 would be a BMI of 20.3. 145 would be a BMI of 19.7. I guess I'll decide once I get down there.
