  • My friend went on a diet and exercise routine and lost 50 pounds in 2 months. She went from 180 to 130 and looks great. She doesn't even starve herself, she just exercises and eats right.

M cousin went on adderall due to adhd and lost 45 pounds in a 2 months too! Why can everyone lose weight but me? I gain it back every single time.
  • "Low and steady wins the race"

People who lose weight very fast, are most luckily to gain it all back faster. The slower you lose weight, the easier it is to keep it off.
  • 50 lbs in 2 months sounds crazy! The slower you lose weight, the better chance you'll have of keeping it off.
Don't worry, you can do it!

Thanks. 50 pounds in 2 months is pretty amazing but she was overweight and ate all the time.
  • Yup, just as everyone said. The slower you lose it, the longer you will keep it off.
  • 50 lbs in 2 months is massively unhealthy. The only way to lose that much weight that quickly is to starve yourself and deprive your body of nutrients. Exercise and "eating right" will NOT give you that level of weight loss. It's simply not humanly possible. If she's telling you she's eating healthily at that rate, then she's lying - both to you and possibly to herself.

Seriously. To lose 50lb in 2 months, you'd have to lose 6.25 lbs per week. That means you'd have to be in a calorie deficit of 3125 calories PER DAY. Most people burn around 2000 calories just to maintain a healthy weight, so that means if she ate NOTHING all day, she'd still have to put in about 2 hours of vigorous physical exercise every day to burn off the additional 1100 calories. And again ... that's with eating NOTHING.

Not that I wish her any ill, but I'd be willing to bet that she won't keep it off.

The only way to succeed long term is to change your eating and exercise habits permanently.

  • im not entirely sure losing that quickly is good for your heart either. But either way, it doesnt really matter how fast they did it, you are doing it too, just at your own pace

She told me what she did. She exercised for 45 minutes-1 hour a day and went on atkins.
  • WOW i lost 20 pounds in 2 months and i thought it was A LOT of weight to lose 50 ., just sounds unhealthy....
  • Lily, please post in this thread again in 6 months, and then again in 1 year. Let us know you YOU and the others are doing. My guess, they will be struggling, and you will be very happy with the slow, steady, and sustainable loss that you have achieved!

Slow and steady really is the way to go!!!

And, I'm with photochick on this one - that kind of loss is very questionable - the math doesn't add up, unless she had a massive amount of water weight to lose in the beginning.
  • I'm lucky if I lose 2 lbs a month. It's better to do it slow! Then you have made a lifestyle change instead of a temporary one.
  • Yeah I know slow and steady wins the race.

BTW, I heard on adderall it is very common to lose a lot of weight fast. But I am sure when/if she goes off she may gain it back
  • I exercise for 45 minutes to an hour a day and eat 1500 calories. There's no physical way I could lose 6lbs a week doing that. During an hour of pretty intense exercise, I burn about 500 calories (average).

Seriously. What you've described is NOT humanly possible. Either she's lying to you about what she did, or she's lying about how much she lost, or she's very ill.

  • Atkins is different than counting calories. She very well could of eaten less than the proper calories. The first week or 2 of atkins she lost around 15 POUNDS because for some reason she was SO sick she could barely eat. The same thing happened to my sister. I think when you do atkins and cut out sugar/carbs your body reacts as if you were going through withdrawl. I have seen her eat, she isn't ill. I think she just lost the bulk of the weight within the first few weeks and then after that it slowed down.

It isn't impossible. Once when I was around 15 years old I had lost 40 pounds over summer break. Granted I was eating way less than I was supposed to (not my fault, I didn't know!) but I still did it. I get that it would be near impossible if you ate say 1500 calories every a day but it isn't impossible all together to lose that amount. I'd be happy to lose 20 pounds at this point
  • will you be jealous when she gains it all back plus some? cause i would bet your money she does...and soon. first, i don't believe her that she didn't start but that aside, people who lose really quickly tend to gain really quickly. and those who starve? not a change she'll keep it off.

i went on ritalin for a time (for a sleep disorder) and let me tell you, i wouldn't do it again even to lose weight. it was miserable. i couldn't eat but that didn't mean i wasn't hungry. i was starving but every time i tried to eat, i couldn't even stand the thought of swallowing. it was not at all pleasant. my cousin had the same problem with adderall. yeah, she lost weight but she didn't feel well and it wasn't an enjoyable experience.
