Another Protien question??

  • I am looking for a good protien powder or shake. I have been using the Atkins brand. But wanted some advice....What kind of protien shake do you use? Do you use the pre-made shakes, or do you use a powder? And which do you like the best?

    TIA
  • I don't trust the protein in those shakes or bars.... you never can be sure how well the supplement meshes with your body. I prefer eating a handful of peanuts (or other nuts) for a protein boost.
  • Hope this helps:

  • I use protein powder. So far, the one that I like most is by Kaizen. I got it at Costco at a really good price, and like the fact that one serving packs 35 g of protein (150 calories). I use the Vanilla Ice Cream flavour.
  • The lastest one I've been using is the Body Fortress vanilla whey powder. It's not bad. 26 grams of protein and 110 calories per scoop.

I'm not sure I understand this comment:

  • I use Iso Whey.

It's a little pricey, ( http://www.isowhey.com.au/Where-to-purchase.htm ), but worth it. Not to mention, it has added vitamins and minerals.
It's clean, versatile (to use in smoothies etc), tasty and comes in 2 flavours.
Has about 110 calories per serve (2 scoops) and 49 grams of protein per 100grams.

Otherwise you can just go with plain whey protein isolate, or soy protein (whey is probably better). As long as it doesn't have a ton of additives - it's also cheaper than the pre made stuff most of the time.

  • I looooooved the Curves chocolate protein shake... Unfortunately I think it's only available for members...
  • This is my powder of choice

Regardless of the "claims" of being able to do 1 set of reps instead of 2 I still do three. Grrrrr. Oh, and I only use one scoop of this powder a day in my oatmeal. Ocassionally I will use a scoop in milk or water for a minimeal with some almonds too.
  • Thanks for all of the tips ladies!! I appreciate it!

I think that I am going to go with a powder instead of the pre-made ones. Seems like a much better idea!
  • I use a protein powder from Max Muscle (High 5--cappucino flavored is my favorite). When I first started lifting weights I was a little resistant to protein shakes, but I don't really like meat all that much, and I do eat lots of eggs (whites) and cottage cheese. I try to get about 125 grams of protein a day, and shakes are pretty much my lifesaver for at least 2 protein servings a day.

FYI--If I tried to get 125 grams of protein from peanuts, I would need to eat about 3000 calories in peanuts. I like peanuts, but not that much! (I just thought it would be fun to look at that calculation since peanuts were suggested).
  • I currently use a soy protein isolate - unflavored, unsweetened. I get this kind because I do mix the pp in with savory stuff almost as much as sweet stuff, so don't want any flavor/sweetener to interfere. I buy from Puritan's Pride, but once this container is done I will switch over to whey protein.

It has a cleaner taste than the soy, and I am also trying to move to a little less soy products.
  • Just my 2 cents... I agree with photochick!.. I use Body Fortress Vanilla and or Chocolate Whey powder, I add it to Flax Muffins or mix it in the blender with WATER or Water and Ice (tip:.. milk sometimes causes gas...sorry to be blunt and some folks aren't affected)...

  • I have been using Body wise protien shakes..they taste awsom..even my kids like them. they have 20grams of real protien and 130 calories..they come in chocalate or vanilla. both flavores are great..but if i mix one scoop of each flavor tothger, add alittle dash of vanilla, and ice, it taste like a twist ice cream cone..very yummy.. ive lost 25 lbs so far. but i also eat regular food too
  • I've been using the Spiru-Tein shake powder. Mixed with a cup of non-fat milk, it has 160 calories and 28 grams of protein. I have it for breakfast and lunch. I add fruits and veggies, plus a bit more protein in the form of peanut butter (Trader Joe's Better than Peanut Butter) and it seems to be working great. It took a bit to get used to the taste, but after a couple days, I'm used to it and looking forward to the different flavors I can add.
  • I haven't found a shake that's 0 carbs so I eat a handful of cold boiled shrimp after working out instead. I've found several shakes that are advertised as 0 carb but after reading the ingredients lists (sucralose, etc.) I don't believe their accuracy.
