Pros & Cons of weighing everyday?

  • I'm new to this forum and have been pointed to the featherweight section of the board although sometimes I don't really feel like a "featherweight" but anywhoo...
I find myself weighing myself everyday. I have read on here that most of you weigh once a week. I find myself almost obsessing over it if I don't weigh everyday.
    Anyone have any thoughts?
  • I do not weigh every day. I have a set weigh-in day once a week, but I will step on the scales mid-week sometimes.

There are so many things that play into slight up and down variations, for example, how much sodium or starchy carbs one took in the day before, or a woman's cycle, all related to water. It's possible to actually have lost fat, but to step on the scale and see a 'gain'. For many people, that would be hard to deal with and when we are trying to manage our eating, who needs another hurdle?

I write down everything I eat, so I know where I stand in terms of intake and expenditure. By weighing once a week, I know I will have lost. I also don't keep track of partial pounds, even though my scale is digital. I round up every time.
  • Ugh...I have such a problem with this. I weigh myself every time I'm at the gym and I know I shouldn't. I think the idea behind it is the different fluctuations in body weight throughout the day/week can cause you to gain a pound when really you've lost one overall. Like I said though, it's like an addiction for me. I'm having a really tough time not doing it. Lucky I don't have a scale in my house...when I go home for the weekends I'm on it multiple times everyday :S
  • Morgan, I too weigh myself everyday (like it's my job!!)... Same time every morning. I find that it affects my mood when I gain or lose. I have tried the once a week weigh in - but am fearful weight will creep up on me....

Perhaps it's a matter of personal preference... As long as it goes down.. I'm happy.

Morgan.. I love your photo - Boxers rule...

  • I weight myself everyday. I like knowing how my weight goes up and down durning the week. (TOM) I due only count a certain day as my set weight. This isn't for everyone. As long as you can take the good with the bad and not let it send you down the food porn of life.
  • I have to weigh daily. I know I'll see ups and downs and I understand that. But when I see an upward trend, I know I need to work immediately to fix it. If I were to weight weekly I wouldn't be able to "nip it in the bud" as quickly.
  • Once a week, only on Mondays. IT helps me to keep in control over the weekends plus...the less I weigh, the less obsessive I am about it all.
  • I weigh twice a day, first thing in the morning and last thing before I go to bed. I don't really count the weigh-in at night; it is so that I'm prepared for my weight in the morning. I don't like to be surprised.

I can't be sure I'll lose from week to week. I am so close to goal, that I'm lucky if I see a loss every two weeks. Sometimes three weeks go by without a loss. If I only weighed once a week, so much anticipation and hope would go into that once weekly weigh-in that it would be devastating if I didn't post a loss (and, chances are, I'm not going to see a loss). Then I'd have to wait a whole other week for another chance at a loss. By weighing every day, if I don't see a loss today, maybe I'll see one tomorrow. If I see a gain, maybe it will be down tomorrow or the next day. There's much less riding on the weigh-in when I do it every day.

So long as I know my eating has been on plan, I don't worry about the minor ups and downs that I see from day to day.
  • Once a week on Friday... anymore would just drive me nuts. Figure out what works for you, and when it becomes a habit, I don't think you'll obsess.
  • I weigh every day to stay motivated...but like BlueToBlue, I sometimes weigh at night so I'm not surprised. I'm on a plateau right now and am using this forum to stay motivated to exercise and eat right.
  • I weigh myself everyday. If I don't I fall off the wagon and then I get scared to weigh in again and it takes me a few days to work up the courage to weigh in again. Weighing in everyday keeps me on track.
  • I weigh every morning. It is just my way of keeping myself in check. I did have to come to terms with the fact that it fluctuates by 2-3lbs randomly. I also try to keep in mind that what I do or don't do takes a few days to show up on the scale.
  • I like to weigh-in every morning... I don't let the fluctuations bother me but it sure keeps me on my toes...
