  • You might think i'm just being silly, But i'm starting to wonder about Aspartame? I have been drinking flavored (never been much of a pop drinker) for a few yr's now, and i'm starting to think that maybe it could be why i have been stalled for so long & why i feel bloated alot of the time? I'm going to stop drinking it and see what happen's. Lemon water is just as good.Just wondered what your take on this would be? Does asperatame effect some more than other's? I wonder?
  • Oh, I'm sure you're right-on with that. Some people's bodies really don't take well to aspartame. I have a couple of friends with that sort of problem -- they aren't necessarily allergic or whatever to it, but they feel noticeably crappier when they consume it. It's definitely something that can be taken out of your diet with relative ease, so go for it if you suspect it's a problem. If you still feel weird once it's been out of your diet for a while, then you'll know you need to look elsewhere!
  • oh yes....aspartame has TONS of suspected health defect symptoms associated with it!!

    Just google "aspartame side effects"
  • its been know to cause memory loss and seizures as well!
  • i'm glad you posted this... I'm a soda drinker, but I just recently switched to diet (no points, lol). About a week ago, I noticed I was breaking out in an unusual rash (identical on both sides of my body) and couldn't find a logical cause for it. After seeing the side effects in the post above, I'm beginning to wonder if that's what caused it...
  • Thank's, you all have reasured me that i was not making a big deal out of nothing. I just got to thinking to myself abt when did i start to stall, i think it was about the time i started drinking flavored water. I'm going to google the side effect's. I hope that this is my reason for not being able to lose? (And it has been a long time.).
  • My husband has a bad reaction when he drinks something with it. I do not. so it really depends on the person.

Most important would be to make sure it is not replacing your water intake. I hear the water is "magic" for the weight loss.
  • OMG it's even in sf gum, I quit smoking 8 month's ago and i now chew alot of gum to help me with the craving's. Oh boy now what do i use? Maybe the health food store has some gum with out aspartame in it? I sure hope so.
  • yeah aspartame has this huge underground warning of health defects that no one really knows about because it is in SO MANY foods that the FDA does not want to tell people about it or limit the amount companies can put in their products...

chuckie: I think some Wrigley's flavors (like the yellow one) doesn't have aspartame...and I know the cinnamon ones usually don't
  • I don't find that it affects me, personally, but a lot of people on 3FC have mentioned that they removed it from their diet & felt better. You may be one of those people that simply does better without. Let us know how it goes!
  • I got on the scale this morning and i'm down 1.5 pd's,and in just a few day's. I'm not sure if it's from taking the aspartame out of my diet or if it's the hrt kicking in? I don't know but i'm going to keep doing what i'm doing.

many health food stores carry gums made with xylitol and no other artificial sweeteners. it's often in the supplement section or with the toothpaste. i think it's a little more expensive - around $2 a packet, but i don't know what regular gum costs - i haven't chewed it in years due to jaw problems which are aggrivated by gum chewing.
  • Aspartame is one of those tricky foods that affect people differently. I can't tolerate it, because it makes me throw up (literally...not fun). Other people do just fine with it. On the other hand, I do just fine and dandy with Splenda.

I don't think it is so much a government conspiracy to prevent people from knowing about side effects...just that some people's body chemistry can't handle aspartame, and others can...I'm allergic to penicillin, and go into anaphylactic shock if I have it, which does not mean it is bad for everyone, but it IS bad for me and I avoid it.

Hopefully you can figure out whether aspartame is the problem by cutting it out. If you feel better, then you are probably sensitive to aspartame and you should avoid it.

Luckily, there are lots of aspartame-alternatives out there, even if you aren't comfortable using Splenda. If you like the flavored waters, I just recently stumbled onto a Crystal Light-like drink mix packet made by Celestial Seasonings. The ingredients are all natural and they are based around powdered green tea and stevia, which is a natural herbal sweetener. I really like the taste, particularly of the Blueberry and Peach flavors.
  • I was in the hospital last week and think it may be related to aspartaem!! I'm doing some experimentation now to see if I can figure it out.
  • i chewed a whole pack of eclipse gum in like 20 minutes, (better than binging right?) broke out into a sweat, went pale, dizzy basicallly thought i was going to die lol....... but really NEVER AGAIN. completely banned that stuff from my body
