  • Its the end of the day, you are ravenous and you have just a little left in your calorie budget. What would you eat if you had

    50 left?

    100 left?

    150?
  • 50: That's a toughie. Probably some FF cottage cheese with lots of pepper.

100: 2 rice cakes with a wedge of Laughing Cow Lite cheese split between them.

150: A Boca burger on a rice cake with plenty of mustard and most of a Laughing Cow Lite wedge (I love that stuff).

    Interesting topic!
  • 50: 2 x soy & linseed corn cakes with vegemite spread

    100: 200gm tub no-fat yoghurt

150: 2 x rye toast or fruit & yoghurt, or fruit salad, or a small tin of tuna with salad leaves...mmmm...tuna...current fave heh
  • 50 - sugar free jello (the clear jelly kind) with a dollop of fat free cool whip and half a cup of strawberries (i have a sweet tooth lol)

50 - 1 serving fat free/sugar free jello pudding.... varies from 50-60 cals per serving (half a cup)

50 - 1/2 cup broccoli (raw or lightly steamed) and 2 tbsp wishbone fat free blue cheese salad dressing (or your choice of fat free dressing)

100 - a cup of chicken noodle or similar soup (clear.... broth based)

150 - 1/4 cup Kashi go lean crunch and 1/2 cup sliced strawberries and 1 6-oz single serving cup of Dannon "lite & fit" vanilla yogurt (it's kinda new here... not sure if it's available everywhere yet - fyi, it's easy on the tummy if you have lactose issues)

150 - a serving of teddy grahams (a snack pack or about 25 of the little guys)
  • 1/2 a protein pancake with a couple of slices of no fat deli turkey ... I think that's about 100 cals
  • Susan, what kind of protein pancakes? Are they homemade? I am always looking for new ways to up my protein intake. Thanks in advance.

50-1 cup of strawberries for 45 calories. Lots of fiber, and lots of "bulk" for the calories-so you feel fuller. This would be the most "full" for 50 calories.

100-a yogurt or a small banana-both are filling for the calories.

150-1 tablespoon of peanut butter with either some celery or a slice of low calorie bread or something to put it on that is 50 calories or less-considering a T. of peanut butter is close to 100 calories. The peanut butter contains protein and fat-which help you feel fuller, and whatever you put it on will add some bulk.
  • Aphil! You're making me hungry
Callystia? There are dozens of protein pancake recipes floating around but I'm more than happy to give you mine
Those cartons of egg whites equal about 16 eggs ... I put that in the blender with a dash of water, 2 1/2 cups of oatmeal and two scoops of no flavour protein powder. I let it soak a bit and sometimes have to add water because it gets thick.
I wipe oil in and out of a nonstick fry pan and make about 1/2 cup of batter at a time. It make 8 cakes.
It is my bread most days.

How do they taste? I have seen the recipes for these before...but I just can't bring myself to make one and EAT IT.
  • You definitely have to eat it with something. It pretty much tastes like ... blah! But I eat them with anything ... fruit, tuna, cottage cheese, peanutbutter, salad ...

I'm going to go back and change my mind here ... they taste a darned sight better than white bread!
  • I would probably eat my normal nightly snack. I was never an extreme "stickler" for calories, 50 calories more or less in a full day wouldn't have rattled me. Even if I were "maxxed" calories for the day, if I were REALLY hungry, I would still eat. What was important to me was not being hungry, since I hate being hungry - I get restless and make really BAD food decisions.

    My two favorite nighttime snacks:

Baked apple with frozen blueberries. If I had a lot of calories left, I would add 1/4 cup of walnuts or granola. Dice and apple, nuke in the microwave for 3 minutes. Add frozen blueberries, cover bowl (or it will splash!!), nuke for 1 more minute.

Heat up 2 tbs of pumpkin butter, dip a banana in it. If I had a lot of calories left, I would heat up 2 tbs of peanut butter or almond butter and dip the banana in that.
  • 50 calories
    1/2 c frozen berries

    100 calories
    100 calorie bag popcorn
    medium to large apple
    medium banana
    1 cup berries

    150 calories
3 oz chicken breast w/ broccoli & cheese
2 pc whole wheat toast w/ 1-2 laughing cow light wedges
1 pc whole wheat toast w/ laughing cow light wedge + 1 apple
  • 50 calories
    - 1/2 cup FF yogurt, or
    - 1/2 cup raspberries, or
    - small (3-4 oz) piece of fruit, or
    - low cal pudding cup (60 calories), or
    - sugar-free fudgesicle, or
    - 5 laughing cow cheese bites (the little squares, not the wedges)

    100 calories
    - 1/2 cup FF yogurt + 1/2 cup raspberries, or
    - 2 small pieces of fruit (3-4 oz each), or
    - microwave popcorn, or
    - low cal pudding cup with a couple Trader Joe's chocolate meringues, or
    - 100 calorie balance bar, or
    - hard-boiled egg, or
    - slice of toast with laughing cow cheese wedge, or
    - Dole peach fruit and yogurt parfait (so decadent I'm sure it's all sugar! )

    150 calories
    - be powered or pria energy bar, or
    - english muffin with 1/2 tbsp peanut butter and 1/2 tbsp NF cream cheese, or
    - apple or apple pear with 2 tbsp NF cream cheese, or
    - mango with soy milk and a little artificial sweetener, or
    - combination of items from the 50 and 100 calories groups, or
    - 1/4 cinnamon almonds (or other nuts that are 140 calories per 1/4 cup serving), or
    - string cheese and a small piece of fruit

When it gets to the end of the day and I'm a little hungry, sometimes I just go to bed. If I'm close to my calorie limit, I know that I've eaten enough and that I'm hungry for some other reason. Being hungry doesn't interfere with my sleep, so sometimes that's the best solution for me. But if I were ravenous, I'd have a small piece of fruit even if I had no calories left for the day.

I love cheese! What is this laughing cow cheese a few of you have mentioned? I was at Publix today and looked for it in the exotic cheeses and the regular cheeses. I didn't see anything called laughing cow.
  • Protein Pancakes
Quote: How do they taste? I have seen the recipes for these before...but I just can't bring myself to make one and EAT IT.
I dont use protein powder in mine, I make the south beach pancake and I think they are pretty good

    1/2c. rolled oats
    1/4 c. cottage cheese
    4 egg whites or 2/3 c. eggbeaters
    1t vanilla
cinnamon and nutmeg to taste (~1/4 tsp of each to start)

Whiz it all in a blender until smooth, cook like regular pancakes.

The recipe doesnt call for milk, but I find adding a splash or two makes it cook a bit better, I prefer a thinner pancake.
