Would someone please critique my new planned w/o routine?

  • Just some background. I used to work out with weights regularly, but fell off the wagon. I've never really done any cardio consistently.

I will be working out at home with a treadmill, exercise ball, hand weights.

I need to lose at least 40lbs and am very unfit, so I would like to hear your thoughts/suggestions regarding my planned routine, but please bear in mind I'm really starting this as a beginner!

Because of time restraints I've planned my workouts in 30-45 mins blocks. Will be doing weight training in the AM, cardio in the evening.

I will also add that when starting to lift again I do use light weights. I have always found in previous experience that working out with weights 6 days a week works great, obviously using a split routine.

Also my cardio will be intervals (increasing speed and/or incline) on 3 of my cardio days. I will be using the Cardio Coach mp3 workout.

So I'm looking at using this routine for perhaps the first eight weeks, after which time I will mix it up a little differently.

Mon : Weights, upper body. 30 mins. Abs.Cardio: Walk treadmill 30 mins (interval)

Tue : Weights, lower body, 30 mins, including abs

Wed: Weights upper body 30 mins. Abs Cardio: Walk treadmill 30 mins (interval)

    Thur: Rest day

Fri: Weights lower body 30 mins, including abs Cardio: Walk treadmill 30 mins (interval)

Sat: Weights, upper body 30 mins. Abs

Sun: Weights, lower body, 30 mins, including abs Cardio: Walk treadmill 30 mins.

I'd like to add in some yoga or pilates to this to. Not quite sure how to fit it in there.

Any advice or suggestions would be great. Thanks!

What did your old workouts look like? Also, do you have any particular strength or fitness goals or do you just want to drop 40#?
  • When I very first started working out with weights, my training was identical to what I'm planning this time. I didnt do any cardio that time. I followed WW and lost about 20lbs.

My #1 priority is to drop 40lbs, but I eventually want to run a 10k. And of course improve my strength. I think a toned body looks great, and that is one reason why I enjoy working with weights.
Once most of the weight is off, I will then re-evaluate my goals.
