Sometimes it is hard to move you butt and get out there. However, signing up for a 5K race is a great way to get started. Why? You're no longer working for your own good but for the greater good and this can provide great motivation. By raising money, you're also raising awareness of your own fitness goals, "I couldn't possibly have more cake, I'm training for the big race." (much better excuse than watching your weight). Also, having a specific goal in mind (the race) is essential to moving your training past the comfort level (strolling) that you're used to!
Ok, so as a beginner, what are some good races?
1. March of Dimes charity walk. These are usually a good distance (like 3-5 miles) and are a walk (not run). You won't feel like the slowest person in the pack.
2. Humane Society or shelter walks. These are usually a 5K "fun run" which means it's not competitive and you can bring your doggie friend.
As you advance, you can consider different races:
1. Being part of a relay team for a triathlon. Say you much prefer biking to running, you can create a team with other members who like to do the other areas of the tri. Danskins triathlons are fantastic all-women events.
2. Prepare for a running 5K. Pick a good cause and start planning for the event. Make sure it's going to inspire you and tell all your friends.
My first charitity event this year is March of Dimes. The response has been great. You can check out my thoughts on preparing for the event in my blog.
Good luck and let me know what events YOU are participarting in?
