Newbie here!

  • Hi there

I'm a 30(nearly 31) year old Aussie. I am married and have 4 children. I have been struggling with my weight since the birth of my first child. My current weight is about 91kg (or just over 200 pounds). I would like to get down to about 65kgs (or just over 140 pounds - I will try and get used to using pounds please bear with me lol). I have no idea really where to start, so at the moment I am just concentrating on getting more exercise and reducing my portion sizes. Anyway I just wanted to say a big hello and that I look forward to getting to know you.

    Cheers

  • Amity,

I read in your bio that you have just been diagnosed with Diabetes 2? That runs in my family too. The best advice is watch your portions, eat a well balanced diet. If you crave something sweet, it's fine to have it, just eat a small portion.

There is a product out there called, Splendra and it is made with real sugar, but it is not as bad for you. Try it, if they have it in Australia, you don't use as much though. It is even good for cooking, there are recipe books out for it as well.

Another tip is to not think of it as a "diet" but as a lifestyle change. Suggest to your whole family that they do this with you, that way you are not making two meals and won't be tempted.

If I can think of anything else I will let you know.
  • Thanks for the advice, we tend to eat relatively healthy anyway, I think its the portion sizes and lack of exercise that has let me down. I am really unfit atm. I go to uni and spend the best part of 8 hours a day sitting on my rear which doesn't help but I'm on holidays now until the end of february so I guess if I'm going to get into the exercising habit now is the time. I managed to do about 15mins on an exercise bike last night and a 20 minute walk yesterday but I have to admit I didn't feel all that motivated lol. And as for the portion sizes, I was brought up with the old make sure you eat evrything on your plate or its wastefull philosophy, its a habit thats hard to break together with completely filling your plate, but I'm trying to get there and with my blood sugars rising all the time I have the motivation to actually get there.
Thanks again for the welcome, I already feel at home here and can tell this will really help me succeed. i have been loggin on daily, not always posting but just reading some of the stories on here helps me maintain motivation so thanks again
