Help: I just started lifting & I'm nauseas!

  • Hi everyone,

Just yesterday, I finally joined the gym ( ). Today was my first day...a light one: 20 minutes of cardio & 3 sets of abdominal exercises. A few hours later, I began to feel very nauseas.

Is it possible that I am experiencing the effects of toxins being released in my bloodstream from starting to lift? If so, what can I do to avoid this? How many days should I expect to feel this way?

It's hard enough to get started on an exercise program, but to feel sick every time you do it makes it even harder. I am eating good (similar to BFL), mostly drinking enough water (although today I could have drank a little more) and avoiding alcohol. I don't smoke. I do drink coffee occasionally (I had two cups tonight).

    Thanks for your wisdom,
  • I would definitely see a doctor. I had a similar problem before right after I exercised and it was a low blood sugar problem. If you aren't eating before and after your workout, that could be your issue, but it is best to talk to your doctor.
  • Hi guys,

Thanks for the welcome! To be honest, I didn't even think about seeing a doctor...when I first started this effort back in January, I saw a doctor and got a clean bill of health and a thumbs up on my nutrition program, but maybe I should go back because maybe something has changed. Thanks for pointing that out. I had ate 4 egg whites, 1 1/2 oranges and 4 almonds about 1 hour before I worked out. Maybe I shouldn't have ate that? Anyways, I will make an appt. or at least call the "Ask-A-Nurse" program.

Hey, what do you guys think of the elliptical trainers, BTW? We did those yesterday and really liked them. They were more fun than treadmills and I seemed to get up a better sweat.
  • BTW, YOU GUYS ROCK! Congrats on your weightlosses. It's so encouraging to see other people doing it!
  • I love elliptical machines, mostly because I am not a steady walker and I tend to walk off the sides on the treadmill and always feel like i'm about to trip and fall (I'm clumsy).
  • Nelie, I am soooooo clumbsy! I thought I was the only person that almost fell of treadmills! lol Maybe that is why I liked the elliptical machine so much. Plus, at my gym, there are two of those machines kind of hidden in a corner at the front looking out the window so that you can watch the cars and people go by...it makes time go by fast.

I'm really liking this new gym I joined: it's a small, local owned gym (not a chain)...it doesn't have that "meat-market" feel that makes me really uncomfortable. My neighbor owns it and he's always willing to answer my nagging questions. It's perfect for me right now. Now, if I can just get into a regular lifting routine. I ordered the BFL journal and it should be here today...I figure I will "officially" start the schedule on Monday, but until then I will still do a thrown-together routine.
