My knee

  • I don't know if I'm posting this in the correct area of the forum but it is related to exercise.
For the past 2-3 days my right knee has become really sore, any pressure applied i feel a sharp pain within. I really think it has to do with some of the work outs I've been doing, I might have accidentally moved it the wrong way or stretched a ligament wrong when exercising. This has never happened before and I don't really know how to respond to it. Should I see a doctor? Should I get a brace/wrap for my knee? Should I take a break from working out for a few days?
  • The pain is behind and below my patella
  • The knee is a pretty complex joint for only have 2 basic movements. There are plenty of structures and tissues that can become affected.

When exercising, are you properly warming up and cooling down? Stretching is very important, but important after exercise.

It could very well be a strained tendon, sprained ligament, meniscus problem.. I would suggest seeking a physiotherapist, chiropractor or massage therapist verses a doctor in this situation. (I understand physio and chiro are doctors). I am a massage therapist and obviously without being physically there I can't really determine much with the info you provided. But take a look at your exercise regimen and see what particular movements could have played a role and take that information to one of the above professionals.

    Good luck!
  • If you have insurance, I would 100% advise seeing a doctor. My husband had knee issues and avoided them for soooooo long - when he finally went, he found out it was his IT band & got a brace and feels 100% better- he could have not wasted months if he had just gone lol...there could be a million things wrong, only a doc can tell for sure - good luck.

What type of exercise were you doing when you felt the initial strain on your knee? There's are lots of tips on this board related to exercise pain in the knee--and what to do and check. It really depends on what you were doing when it happened.
  • a knee is nothing to mess around with....my DH ended up with surgery on both knees at different times, for the same meniscus problem actually in both knees

on the other hand, I myself tend to avoid doctors too....my rule of thumb is that, if it's NOT getting better with common sense care, then it needs to be checked out....for example ive learned that for myself personally, if a cough does NOT go away or improve, it's time to head to the doctor because it is without a doubt pneumonia (have learned this the hard way)

if it's REAL PAIN and not just a workout muscle ache, and doesn't get better, make sure to see a doctor because you could be setting yourself up for future damage by avoiding it
