Protein

  • I am over 300 pounds and was wondering how much protein people here the same weight eat. Thanks
  • If I told you I ate 120-130g of protein for my pre-surgery diet (I did wls in January) with around 60-120g carbs, & 30-60g fat and was losing would it shock you?

What is your caloric goal? How physically active are you? Do your carbs from from dairy, veggies, or grains? Are the fats you consume healthy fats or unhealthy fats?
  • I try for 1500 calories I know that is low for a guy my size.My carbs come from everything I
do not restrict where they come from except bread I dont eat it.

Right now I am about 70 grams of protein 100 carbs maybe a bit more and 50-60 grams of fat.
This is of course a guestimate but I think I am pretty close and I drink 2.5 liters of water.

Fats are mostly good I eat seeds and nuts and sardines flax a lot.

And wow I would of never guessed 120 grams of protein.
  • What we try to do when we lose weight is to lose fat, not muscle...

324lbs (your ticker) converted to kg is 146.96 kg so let's say 147 kg.

0.86g protein x 147 kg = 126.42 g of protein a day as your recommended goal (not pulling this number out of my butt. Doing it based on a registered dietitians numbers).

If you are looking at protein levels... Are you looking at a Protein Modified Fast (it puts you in ketosis). It is not a classic ketogenic diet because the idea is your body consumes YOUR fat instead of being fed more fat.

Protein is 4 calories per gram.
Carbs are 4 calories per gram.
Fat is 9 calories per gram.

If you tried for a 40% protein, 30% carbs, 30% fat diet it would work out like this:

    Approximately 1265 calories a day

126.42 g of protein is approximately 505.7 calories.
95 g of carbs is approximately 379.3 calories
42 g of fat is approximately 379.3 calories

This is basically what I did in the 3 weeks pre-op. 1 protein shake a day, and the rest from low fat foods, lean meats, green veggies, etc.

I lost 5 lbs a week on this.

The numbers I worked with were actually:

129 g of protein is approximately 516 calories.
100 g of carbs is approximately 400 calories
45 g of fat is approximately 405 calories

So a touch higher then the ideal done to the pound for you... It was easier to aim for the protein and get the other two within 10 g + or - so my day would fluctuate. 10 g more fat is another 90 calories a day... 10 g more carbs is 40 g a day but I needed my carbs under a certain amount or I stopped losing inches.

I also lost a lot of inches before starting this by doing something similar but my protein was 110g a day, carbs were 100-130 g a day, and fat was 60 g a day.

Hope this info helps with some ideas.
  • I did not mention that I also have high blood pressure so would that matter on higher protein. Also were you eating 3 normal meals or 5-6 smaller ones. I like smaller ones as I hate feeling bloated. Thanks
  • breakfast, lunch, dinner + 3 snacks

2oz protein for breakfast, 1 serving of fat, one low carb fruit or low carb veggie
3oz for lunch, 1 serving of fat + 2 servings of carbs + low carb veggies
6 for dinner, one serving of starch (grain or veggie), low carb fuit or veggie

Morning snack was a piece of fruit and a protein shake
Afternoon was either veggies cut up or yogurt
Evening was crackers and low fat cheese

I wasn't eating high sodium foods so I am not sure what your blood pressure would have to do with it. I am actually hypoglycemic so I had to stay balanced all day and this kept me there.
  • Thanks and this is what you ate to loose 5 pounds a week. Thanks
  • That was my pre-op diet and I lost 5 lbs a week on it.

I wouldn't do it long term but it kick starts things if you are stalling out.
  • So do you eat more now. Thanks
  • I am eating around 130-140 g protein per day and my diet is pretty much a 50% protein and 25% and 25% fats/carbs. It is the medifast diet. I eat 6 times a day and my blood pressure has gone down.
  • crazycatlady33 do you mind if I PM you. Thanks
