For those counting calories

  • Sorry about all the questions this morning. I've been meaning to ask this question for some time now but I keep forgetting to ask it.

For those that are counting cals do you count raw/cooked veggies?
  • I count them, but I don't worry too much about absolute accuracy. I eat veggies that come in a five pound bag from Costco. I use their calorie count. Other things, I find something that seems close and use that count. For instance, if I make something like a Taco and use lots of veggies, I count the veggies like a vegetable salad. For me, it is important to be aware of exactly what I am eating, but not obsess on the exact calories of things that don't matter so much. When I eat snack foods I weigh and measure and try to be very accurate so it gets through my head that these foods are going to add up fast.
  • It varies per person. Some people do, some don't. I don't unless it's a lot of veggies (like a HUGE salad or a whole bag of carrots), or something higher in calories, like avocado or potatoes.

Because then when I'm munchy or hungry in between meals, I have a "no calorie" food to eat to keep me away from other stuff.
  • Yes, I do.
  • I do. I love seeing those low calorie counts for fairly high volumes of food.
  • If it has a calorie I count it. You can not count them if you wish but they still have calories added to your daily intake.
  • as long as it has a calorie it gets counted.
  • I count them, I don't see a reason not to. Plus since I'm doing a food log, it is good to see what I'm eating. If I am eating too few vegetables, I can tell by glancing at my food log.
  • I started by counting absolutely everything I could. I still count most veggies, but I've stopped counting the greens. You can eat a ridiculous amount and come up with 30 calories. Since the calories are so insignificant, I don't count them. Now the salad dressing... That's another story altogether!
  • I do. I weigh and measure eveything and level it off! If I don't I start 'rounding' or 'heaping' the measuring scoops! I was getting at least 3/4 cup in a half cup scoop!

Even the calories in spices...who knew paprika had 6 per teaspoon?!
  • Okay then it's settled. I am counting the veggies. Thank you all for your comments!
  • I count everything, including the greens.
  • I count everything but am also not worried about absolute accuracy.
  • I count everything but lettuce and pickles.
  • I don't count pickles or pickled peppers. I love peperoncini peppers straight from the jar, and the entire jar is 90 calories - I think the most I've ever eaten in one sitting is half a jar and usually it's more like a third, so I keep it as my 'out of cals, need a snack' go-to. I hardly ever need it, but it's almost a safety blanket knowing I have something tasty to snack on that won't kill my count.

Everything else I try to count.
