It's peanut butter jelly time!

  • No, seriously! I'm on MFP right now (and I posted this here cause I didn't really know where else to put it), and I'm trying to find a pb&j that matches the caloric value of my own pb&j so I don't have to manually put it in (hello, laziness!). Well, good lord, every pb&j on there is AT LEAST 350 calories! And I'm like, "What the heck are they putting on this sandwich?"

Of course, I do realize that most people don't make their pb&j like I do - I only use one tablespoon of peanut butter, one tablespoon of jelly (and the jelly we have is only 30cal), and my bread is only 100 calories per 2 slices, so my sandwich only comes out to about 230cal. 300-350, I can see if you use a full serving of everything and the products your using are a little bit higher in calories. But what about these people that have sandwiches on there at 400+cal? Are they putting half the jar of peanut butter on there? Seems kind of ridiculous to me, lol.
  • I know if I wasn't being careful I could put half a jar of PB on a sandwich! hehe

    ((((PB)))))
  • If we are talking about the pbj sandwiches I used to eat, then yeah the 300-350 is good. But if you talk about the ones I eat now, then I have 90 cal bread, 100 cal per tbsp pb and 50 cal jelly. So that's a big difference! I use fitday, and if something has more cals and I don't really care about the other totals or the micronutrients for the day, then I will just adjust the amount to what I know the cals are. Like .75 of a sandwich if it makes the total cals right. But only if I don't care about the vitamins and minerals, fiber, fat, etc. Just calories.
  • I could probably easily make a 400 calorie peanut butter sandwich.... I love peanut butter.

Peanut butter is something I HAVE to measure or I will go overboard lol
  • Isn't 1 tablespoon of PB like 90 cals? So that's just a couple more tablespoons and over a larger slice of bread, is pretty easy to go overboard. A lot of bigger slice whole wheat breads are like 130 cals per slice so 260 cals for bread, a few tablespoons of PB and there ya go.

This, lol, I measure it out for this very reason. I USED to glob peanut butter on both slices of bread and then put a TEENY bit of jelly, lmao. And then while dieting, I've discovered that one tablespoon of peanut butter is gracious plenty for just about anything I use it for.
  • I'm not sure if you use this function, but using MFP through a computer (although it's probably on the mobile one also, I just haven't searched for it), go to My Meals and add your individual items once then you can just use your actual measurements each time without having to do it individually each time.

I make everything from scratch so this is a huge benefit for me, especially because trying to lose weight (and for me, because of food intolerances) I have a ton of substitutes for lower fat/lower calorie options and using measured, single servings so I can never find the right options on MFP.
  • Don't know if this will help with the peanut butter (it's whipped peanut spread), and I see the jam/jelly, along with many other food products. Walden Farms has products with no calories, fat, carbs, gluten or sugars of any kind.

This is for whipped peanut spread. Never tried it, but here's the link -
