Quitting smoking on IP?

  • I've been a smoker for 20 years but now that i am on the journey to get fit and healthy, and IP is working for me, i also want to quit smoking. I have a fear that it may "derail" my IP efforts. I think i can manage the symptoms of withdrawals since i have the IP regiment under control. I have very little cravings that I haven't been able to manage and i am much more conscious of what i put into my mouth now as well.

Has anyone else tried to quit smoking while on IP.....any advice or support would be much welcomed. Thank you 3FC family....your all awesome !!!
  • Hi wendywendy,

My husband is doing IP as well and has been trying to stop smoking since the first part of this year. He briefly started back and then decided to stop again when we started the IP. He found a website that seemed to have him very excited and it explained the addiction and gave him the support and tools he needed. They recommend doing the patch...do them all the way through and no skipping weeks or steps. in addition to the patch they recommend using the lozenges. He has found that combination to be very helpful. I will ask him what the website is and will post it for you later today if you are interested.
  • Quitting smoking is tough!!! But you can do it I wish you the best of luck! If you have cravings try drinking some water with lemon instead or go for a five minute walk. When I quit I started putting together jigsaw puzzles. it helped keep my mind off smoking and eating. do you knit? Cross-stitch? Doing things that engage both your hands and your mind supposedly helps.

  • Not sure how you feel about chemical support but I used Chantix when I quit (after 20 years) and found it astonishingly easy -- kind of like IP in a way. You're allowed to keep smoking for the first month after you start taking it -- I was totally uninterested in smoking after about 10 days and never looked back. That was three years ago.

Your Dr can write you a scrip for it -- I had none of the side effects but some people report a few minor issues. Also, it was covered by my insurance!
