Do you have a "crutch"?

  • Do you have a food or beverage that you know you should probably not eat/drink, but you have a hard time staying away from it? I'm not talking about junk food or candy, but something that is low-calorie or low-fat that maybe keeps you on the straight and narrow diet path, but is not necessarily the best thing for you to have?

For me, I'm having a tough time breaking the diet soda habit. I know I should only drink water, but I still tend to have a diet soda every day. I still occasionally eat Subway, which is relatively low-calorie but has no nutritional value in the bread. And the occasional snack-size bag of Baked Doritos.

I am (knock on wood) still doing quite well on the diet, but I can't help but think I would be doing even better if I could just stay away from some of these crutches that are absolutely devoid of nutritional value.
  • ugh...potato chips
and ANY potato chips......actually, carbs in general:/ hahaha
  • Wheat thins! Obviously they're a lot better than tossing back a bag of chips, but I have a hard time keeping them to single serving which makes them not so great.
  • I have lots of them: white bread from my favourite boutique bakery, sweet potato chips, popcorn, pretzels... but I don't consider them "bad" in any way. As long as I don't overeat or eat mainly unhealthy foods, I have no qualms about building a meal around one of the above-mentioned foods. Whatever helps me stay motivated and on plan is a good thing, in my books.

  • Salted dry roasted peanuts. I'm addicted.
  • My crutch lately has been those vita muffins. I have one every day at 3:15. It keeps me on track. I hope to think that it is a good diet food since it does not have any preservatives, but I could be eating better. I also have 3 dark chocolate squares after dinner many nights a week. That is 200 throw away calories per day. How can I keep that up when I get lower in my daily budget? Not sure if I can swing it.
  • Ditto on the nuts.
I could munch on hundreds of calories in a single snacking if it's nuts that I don't measure out first.
I gotta stay away from the rice chips too..I'll eat the whole bag.
  • It's diet soda for me too. I have one can a day. If you pry it from my hands you might lose yours.
  • Fiber 1 >___>; it has fake sugar in it, ugggg....

But it keeps me so full!
  • Splenda and diet soda, not great for you but possibly better for me than sugar. Maybe?

I love honey roasted peanuts, walnuts and chocolate but I have to strictly portion b/c of the high calorie content.
  • splenda. i have unintentionally stopped drinking diet cokes, but i still have one here and there.

crackers, kill me. i cannot keep them in the house. or anything else particularly delicious.
  • Low-sugar skinny mochas. I make them at home with skim milk, espresso, SF Hazelnut creamer and a tsp. of dark chocolate cocoa mix. They are only 150 cals, but I hate that the SF creamer is made with Splenda. But the regular stuff is too sweet, even in very small quantities.

I drink one EVERY morning. And often in the afternoon. SOmetimes it seems like a waste of 150-300 cals, but it's mostly skim milk and the caffeine is much needed!
  • Ughhh two things - when I cook it's portion sizes - I love LOVE pasta so I eat a lot of lean cuisines/smarts ones - but if I cook a pasta dish I generally eat 3 times what a smart ones serving would be. I know this and I know I should half the portion...but I never do.

Also, I always always need something sweet after lunch. This is really the only meal and maybe it's b/c I sit at my desk at work but who knows, so I generally have to have a piece of chocolate or two or three.
  • Dannon Light and Fit Yogurt and Jello 60 Calorie Pudding cups.

They are the only Franken food I eat, but I do enjoy them. I have the Yogurt over frozen blueberries every night.

It's the artificial sweeteners in the Yogurt that make it not so good, and who knows what the Jello Pudding is made of!
  • I have that same issue with pasta, so it only gets made once a month lol

Diet sodas, i know i should stop but they are sooo good

subway is my go-to fast food

100 calorie packs of things if im craving chips or cookies or whatever they are my go to, I can stop myself from eating more then one, but not more then one serving of non pre-portioned snacks.
