  • I just ate a whole turnip. And feel like I made a big cheat it was so darn delicious! It was peeled, quartered, thin sliced ,toss with oil, S&P, roasted till crispy. Never thought I would ever regard this as a treat but after ten days of green it sure was good. Hard to believe this is a low carb veg. please tell me i haven't blown it sky high!!

turnips fine, should try them as fries...very good
  • Never thought to fry a turnip, nor roast one for that matter. Been looking forward to Thanksgiving dinner and some boiled/mashed/bit o butter added turnip, but you both have given me ideas! Love turnips. Wish I could get fresh all year round.
  • What do these taste like... I've always walked right past them at the store..
  • Kind of hard to describe....I never ate them much before now, except at holidays made by Mom or Grramma and they always boiled, mashed, added butter. They are the closest veg to potato on this diet and I really enjoyed mine lat night. I got a small YELLOW turnip. The longer it cooks, the sweeter it becomes, otherwise there is a slightly bitter taste. Try them sliced 1/4 inch thin, toss in a big bowl with 2 tsp. Olive oil, add salt and pepper. Spread on a cookie sheet, single layer and roast in 425(f) oven for 30 min. Or so till they are soft inside yet brown and crispy on the outside. Deli IOU.

I was so excited to try them after all the talk here and I thought they were a complete waste of money. I couldn't eat more than a couple bites and they made me gag. They are kind of bitter I'd say.
  • I cut mine up and put "fry spice" that I found. They were so delicious!! Even got my boyfriend hooked, a great alternative to real fries. However I couldn't get them crispy, but I blame that on my poor oven in my apartment, doesn't get too hot.
  • turnip is very much like rutabagga. I have used them in soups, stews, chili. Mashed with cauliflower for mashed potatoes, baked fries and hashbrowns. The fresh turnips are sweeter than the old ones. They do have a little bitter taste but this and kohlrabi are my go tos for potatoes...
  • Never tried Rutabugga nor Kolrabi! But I will..how do you cook them?

I make fries out of them both. slice up for fries put on whatever spice you like ( my fave is club house garlic and pepper) I put the fries in a bowl put my spice over top and shake to mix it up then about 1/2 teaspoon of EVOO and shake it up again (you can use a big baggie might mix better). put on a greased cookie sheet and bake for about 30 min or until crisp but not burnt (takes a little time between crisp and burn so have to watch the last little while.) I cook them at about 375. Was having kohlrabi for supper on fridays with fish as my treat, just be careful the kohlrabi is a little high in carbs.
  • Is there something that can be done to get rid of the bitterness in the turnips? Like soaking in sea salt water or something. I made them last night and overall my husband and I liked them but he couldn't get past the bitterness.

I boiled mine first for 10-15 mins which gets rid of the bitterness taste. Mine honestly had no flavor other than the seasoning I put on them. I'm not sure if you boiled yours first but I highly recommend it. I loved them.
  • I boiled mine first as well and didn't notice a bitter taste. I peeled and sliced them up like fries, boiled them for about 5 minutes and then put them in the oven at 425 for about 20 mins then broiled them for another few minutes. I tossed them in oil, S&P and a savory season blend before the oven. I think I will slice them like chips next time. I thought the fries were delicious under the IP veggie chili.
  • Great idea. No i did not think to boil them. I will try that because i really like the idea of "fries." Thank you for the advice.

BTW i did the kale chips too and they are SOOO good.
  • I made turnip fries the other night and my 3-year-old gobbled them up before anyone else could get any. I also baked them with chicken the other night. I use them anywhere a recipe might call for potatoes, including cod cakes that we might have tonight.
