New & nervous

  • Hello All,

I’m new to the community but have been reading posts over the past two years. I have only now just gotten the courage to join.

My situation is not pretty. My BMI is over 45. I have hypothyroidism and high cholesterol. I used to carry most of my weight in my derriere and my thighs but am starting to gain weight in my stomach.

I plan to go back on the Metabolic Research Center diet. I would also like to participate in a Zumba class but am afraid of being ridiculed. I would love to hear from anyone who can offer some words of advice or share your story of how you overcame your fear of public exercise classes.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and I wish you all the best.
  • Welcome Baby Doll! I would first like to say that I am glad you are jumping in with us now Sounds like you have a plan and that's great! As far as worry of what others think, remember you are doing this for YOU, and everyone has a starting point. I also think you will find that people are more supportive, for the most part, than what you would think. It's the reason shows like the "Biggest Loser" have become so popular. Honestly most of the people who do make remarks or judge, it's because they struggle with their own demons (just cause they don't match yours, doesn't mean they don't exist), and the difference is.. YOU are working to correct yours You are worth the work, you are worth the effort, YOU deserve to have the rest of your life in front of you be a happier one!
  • Welcome! I have thought about doing Zumba too. I've never had the courage to do any dancing at all. My husband loves to go to clubs and dance and he's given up this passion because I won't join him. I thought Zumba seemed like a fun way to learn some dance moves and lose weight. I'm still nervous though, because I know I can't do a lot of what those Zumba pros do.
  • Welcome Baby Doll! I also just "officially" joined the people posting after several years of reading about everyone else's successes. I think it will be helpful to actually participate, and I hope you find it helpful as well. I took my first group exercise class this Spring - and it was a Zumba class. It is really popular at the Rec Center I belong to. There were people of all shapes, sizes and experience there. It was a lot of fun!! The instructor did a great job of showing everyone how to tailor the moves to their fitness level. I thought I would feel like a fool, but I actually had a lot of fun! I think you might like it..........
  • Hey!! I havent had the courage to start a Zumba class yet in my local gym. However, I have searched Zumba on Youtube. I found a few beginner classes. They're short, but you can make a playlist of them. They give step by step instructions on how to do some of the moves. . If you can't find them, just pm me

  • Welcome
Glad you joined. You will be so happy that you did! The people on here are very motivational & informative. Just remember to do what works for you & to take one day at a time. Also, have you thought about getting Zumba Fitness on PS3 or Xbox? That may be a way to get used to the Zumba moves & maybe make you more comfortable before joining a class?
