this is probably in the wrong spot, but....(Long)

  • i think I am going to be using this board and another I found so I though I would re-print this here too.

I think I'm going to give this a try! I had been reading and it just seemed difficult to me trying to "percentage" everything 40% of that 30% of this....but I'm gonna try! Below you will find a reprint of a little bit about myself....the only thing I can add to it is that I have as of Dec. 4th acquired the temporary custody of my 5
year Granddaughter...and as much as I love her, it's very difficult! Her mother is stripping and was leaving her everywhere and anywhere, she was withdrawn from school because she had missed so much. Aaaanyway................

I was born and raised in Daytona Beach and now, for the last 20 years or so, call Louisville Ky home. I have always had a weight a problem, but always managed to keep it down "just" enough (in need of loosing about 20 pounds, but I carried it really well) to get by being the lead singer of a fairly successful alternative rock band. I always figured that as long as I was lucky enough to have my mothers genes and not look my age, I'd continue the music I love so much. Well, I didn't count on the "other" side of getting older, I just couldn't keep up like I used to with work AND the band. I get tired quicker for one and don't really enjoy it as I used to and now want to spend more time with my grandchildren. Well, I remarried (4th and LAST time), and gave up the band. I have now in the last 3 years of re-married life, gained 40 pounds, add that to what I had and I AM FAT! There's no more practice, setting up equipment, tearing down equipment, playing out.....I'm not moving like I used to! I tried the Atkins diet, and I DID lose a little on it, not like some of the others though! It seemed as if I gained it back as soon as I ate a carbohydrate, I did the WW thing and it was awful trying to calculate points on everything that went into my mouth! I am SO lost about this I don't know what to do! I truly want to lose this weight and have no where to turn!. . I have three sons and 4 grandchildren.

My interest include, but not limited to, ancient Egypt, metaphysics, computers, and ANIMALS! I work at an animal resort and love ALL animals! I am 48 years old, born October 20th 1954 (makes me a Libra on the cusp of Scorpio, Capricorn rising, Scorpio in Mars, Mercury & Venus if your into that sort of thing) I share my home with 4 dogs, 3 cats, 4 ferrets, 13 domestic pet rats, 3 pet tarantulas, a 5' iguana, and a bird. Oh yeah, and 1
husband with a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) that is very difficult to live with.
  • LADY, I copied your post and put it on our WEEKLY SUPPORT BOARD so everyone could read and respond to it
  • Hi Lady! I read after I replied to you on the other thread about not being able to get the book until Friday. Here are some good links that I recommend that will help explain some of this to you until you read the book. Once you read the book, it will make much more sense! Good luck with your new granddaughter. She is lucky to have a grandmother that cares so much for her.

For info on the Glycemic Index - This is the best site I have found to explain it so thoroughly:

Here is something that Debelli posted on the Information Board that might help explain to you the percentages. It might seem confusing now, but once you do the math, you will have a daily guideline of how many fat and protein grams you can eat every day thereafter. It really won't be any harder than counting carbs for Atkin's.

"BEACH posted the information above on the percentages of fats, proteins and carbs that are recommended on SB. Here is the way to break it down so you can understand how many grams you should be consuming daily:

Each gram of fat is equal to 9 calories
Each gram of carbs is equal to 4 calories
Each grams of protein is equal to 4 calories

I consume 1200 calories a day, so I will use this as an EXAMPLE.

If you are consuming 1200 calories, and 30% is to come from fat, you would have a total of 360 calories (30% of 1200 is 360). You divide this 360 by 9 (because each fat grams is equal to 9 calories) and get 40 which is 40 grams of fat per day.

Protein at 30% would give you 360 calories, divide that by 4 and you have 90 grams of protein to take in.

Carbs are 40% and would give you 480 calories, divide that by 4 and you have 120 grams of carbs to take in. "

Also, here is a really good success story page- she also has a lot of tips and menu ideas:

Last but not least, a good review of the plan:
