Does cooking with PROTEIN POWDER kill the protein?

  • I heard on some other boards that when you cook protein powder (whey, I'm assuming), you KILL the protein in it? Anyone know anything about this?

I was thinking of doing some baking and adding protein powder as a low fat/cal way to sneak in some extra protein. Thanks!
  • My guess is that it doesn't, since then we'd have to eat our meat raw.
  • Cooking can break down some amino acids, and can denature (or change the structure) of some proteins, but it's not a big deal - it doesn't destroy the protein.

It's no different than with most foods that are cooked. You lose some nutrients, but that doesn't mean you need to eat everything raw.

The only way for cooking to "kill" (destroy completely) proteins, fats, and carbohydrates would be to burn the food to the point of inedibility. If you can eat it, most (virtually all) of the protein is still going to be there.
  • Hmm, I've cooked and baked with protein powder and never heard that before. The protein bars I've made sure seemed to be protein filled after baking!
  • Thanks gals...It wasn't any "reputable" source that I read it on....but since the assertion was made, wanted to check it out!

I just made the BEST pumpkin raisin low fat muffins yesterday and was thinking about adding a scoop or two of vanilla whey protein powder to help with the macros.

    Thanks again!
