In between sizes?

  • I'm currently sitting around 150. I've been about 145 before and I was still a size 10. So I'm thinking I'll remain a size 10 until I hit about 140ish. The problem is that my size 10s are baggy on me. Which makes me look bigger than I really am.

Plus all of my winter shirts and sweaters are too big on me too. I don't want to invest any money in clothes until I reach my goal weight (or get closer to it). But at the same time i don't want to look frumpy and bigger than i really am. I currently have a single pair of jeans that fits me snuggly--and to be honest they aren't the most flattering because they are kind of straight leg and I don't really have the calves for those...

    what do you ladies do?

  • I was actually thinking of waiting
to buy clothes at my goal weight
as well. I buy a couple of jeans
and shirts here and there, but
nothing that's going to cost me
    a lot of money.
  • I know the feeling so well! Your old clothes are too big but new ones are just a little bit too small, and usually it isn't even worth it to buy them because you'll just keep sizing down. Not that that's a bad thing

You could try belting tops at the waist to show off your figure, and make it clear that there is extra fabric as opposed to extra you (but do so in a way that doesn't make you look frumpy). Or, if you know how to sew, a few adjustments and too big clothes can fit much better. Even if you don't a big safety pin can make shirts/skirts/dresses fit tighter and look more flattering.

Then again, it is really cold where I am for winter so I don't much care if I'm swimming in fabric. So long as it is very warm fabric
  • Cheapy cheap cheap stores. Clearance racks, Salvation Army/Goodwill/thrift stores.
  • I get really cheap "in between" clothes. The problem is that I haven't really gotten anywhere in a loooong time, so those cheapo clothes have gotten more wear than I would have liked them to
I personally prefer my clothes to be slightly large rather than a bit tight, as tight clothes make me feel even bigger and bulkier.
  • I second the cheap store idea. Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and Filene's basement are great options. If you can, hold out until after xmas and you can get great deals at regular stores as well.

I've been wearing a lot of cardigans and jeggings. I buy the cardigans a size too small but wear them unbuttoned, so its less noticeable that they're too small, in the hopes that I'll get more wear out of them. Jeggings are also a good option because they're thicker than leggings, the stretch will be a little more forgiving than regular jeans, and won't bag as much as you lose more weight. Sweater dresses will also look good as you continue to go down.
  • I don't have a lot of money (I'm a student), and I'd much rather save up now and buy adorable smaller clothes when I hit goal than spend more now when I'm still shrinking. It's worse as I get smaller - like, when I started I'd drop 1 size every 20 lbs. Recently I dropped 2 sizes in 15. Yikes. So I don't want to shrink out of cute things, either.

So I wait until my jeans sag badly around my hips and butt, and then buy a new pair or two at a cheap store. I'm doing okay on shirts, as I had some smaller ones from when I was smaller that I'm wearing now. But overall, I try not to buy much. Saving that for my goal weight.
  • Definitely get some belts, to help the jeans last longer as you continue to shrink. If you wash them everyday, that helps shrink them up a bit too, since jeans tend to stretch a little after you wear them. I usually wait until my jeans are falling off me, even with the help of the belts, before buying new ones, and then I look for pairs that are on sale/clearance/whatever.

Or my mom comes home one day and says, "Stop wearing clothes that don't fit," and gives me jeans that are the right size. XD That's actually one of my Christmas presents, jeans that fit, so if anyone asks what you want for Christmas...
  • Hi,
I've been buying most of my clothes at consignment stores. I was really heavy and wore jeans and sweatshirts even to work. It wasn't really appropriate for my job but no one said anything. Anyway when the jeans got way to big I had to buy new sizes and found a plus size consignment store in a near by town. You wouldn't even need a plus size store. They are really picky about what they accept and everything I buy is brand new, or almost brand new and usually an expensive brand. I dress way up now even wearing jewelry and multiple piece outfits. Since I have been steadily getting smaller I have been taking the clothes back to them when I buy new ones. Still don't know if I made anything. A pair of jeans costs about 7-8 dollars this way.

My daughter and her friend who are in their twenties went with me once although they were leary at first they both bought several things.
