  • I have learned so much here about seasonal food. In years past, my seasonal foods were Halloween candy, Thanksgiving deserts, Christmas candy, Valentine candy, and then Cadbury Eggs at Easter. Now I have real grown-in-the-ground foods that I look forward to eating!

Here at 3FC I learned about my 2 favorites - Honeycrisp apples for the fall and Clementines for late fall and winter. Thank you very much whoever it was that posted about them!!! I just got my first Honeycrisp apples for this fall. They are so good!

What are your favorite Fall foods?
  • I like it when the apples come in, too.
  • Oh, I LOVE Fall foods!

I made a root vegetable dish last night with: pearl onions, rutabaga, parsnips, sweet potatoes and carrots.
    Winter Squash! Butternut, acorn, spaghetti
    Sweet potatoes
    popcorn
Caramel apples (What? You can't have ALL healthy foods! )
  • Oh, I love this topic! I have so enjoyed eating for the season, even though so far I have only had a summer and now a little bit of fall. This summer I had such a great time exploring the farm market -- summer squash, vine-ripe tomatoes, delicious corn on the cob, ripe, sweet melons. That was fun! haha Now I am REALLY enjoying all of fall's bounty -- LOTS of apples (I just tried honeycrisp for the first time this year, and BOY are they delicious!), acorn and butternut squash, root veggies. I am going to buy beets next time I go to the store. I have heard they are delicious roasted, and I've only ever tried the pickled canned kind (which I do love on salads). Most all of this is at the grocery store year-round, but I have such a new outlook on food (and life, really), and it's been so much fun to eat for the season!
  • I love that it's soup time again Fall/winter = soup time and Spring/Summer = salad time for me I've already made two different stews that have been gobbled up by the family since the weather has turned cold.
  • Yes, it is in the grocery store year round. But I love shopping at Aldi, and for the most part, their produce is seasonal. So no more peaches and plums now...and I brought home my first butternut squash. I feel like I'm at a farmers' market when I go there.
  • I love that it's soup time again. DH wants veggie soup all summer but I just can't get into soup until it is cool outside.

Eliana, I am stopping at Aldi on my way home just to see what they have!
  • I love soups and stews when it gets cooler too!

I like the winter squashes, and it seems we get nicer leeks this time of year in the stores (YUM!! I love leeks!) Baked sweet potatoes are nice.

Do not miss pomegranates when they show up in stores! They have such a short season when they are heavy and juicy (I think late Oct to Dec) and if you haven't tried them you must. The arils are fantastic in salads, in oatmeal, or just as a snack.
  • I too love soup when the weather gets cooler. Another fall food I enjoy is pumpkin. I like to add some to my morning oatmeal. It gives it a nice flavor and adds a bit of additional fiber. Just make sure not to buy the can with pumpkin pie filling!
  • Tai, what else do you do with pumpkin? I have only made pie with it.

Have you been there before? Take a quarter for the shopping cart and some bags. You can buy a bag for .10.

Depending on the store, produce is hit and miss, but it is usually darn good, especially that which is in season! Their peaches are looking pretty pathetic right now, but that's because they're on their way out of season.

    Have fun!
  • I have shopped Aldi on a regular basis since last spring, so I have not seen what produce they have in fall. The produce at my store seems to be very standard summer produce, not any unusual (to me) produce. It will be interesting to see if the fall is different. They normally have Gala apples and I would love to see the Honeycrisp at Aldi prices!
  • I am all for the apples, too. I love them raw and baked apples are yummy too.
  • Honey Crisp apples!!

This year I'm looking forward to branching and learning about different squashes. I really want to know what an acorn and butternut squash taste like.

I also just got out my crock pot cookbook and am planning some yummy stews and chili's.

I was new to squash a few years ago. I can tell you my easiest method of preparation. I peel them with a vegetable peeler. It's actually quite easy to do. Then I cut them horizontally and scoop out the seeds. Next I cube them and bake covered at 350 for 45 min to 1 hr. The old me added butter and brown sugar.

Acorn squash I just chop in half, de-seed and cook the same way, but whole and with a little water.
