Road trip... 12 days no exercise!

  • Hello everyone! I've been lurking for quite a while and finially decided to stop being a creep and post a question

I've been very active my whole life, but have recently been hitting the gym pretty hard, it being summer and all... I'm really happy with the results I've been seeing, but my question is this... I'm going on a road trip with my boyfriend at the end of the month, which I'm really excited about. However, it will be 12 days straight of pretty much straight sitting in the car. (We did this last year, and our stopping was pretty minimal!) What can I do to avoid reversing all the hard work I've done? Obviously I'm going to be super careful about eating healthy, but will I lose muscle/gain fat in that span of time? If so, what can I do to avoid it? I was thinking about bringing a couple of resistance bands, but running/cardio is pretty much out of the question.
    Thanks for your help!!

  • Any movement is better than none. Might I suggest going for a walk when you stop. Spend a few extra minutes at the rest areas and walk around. Stretch. Take healthy foods with you. If you're stopping at hotels a lot of them now have fitness rooms. It might just be a treadmill and a bike, but that should be enough.
  • You could bring some 5lb weights with you (or two full water bottles) and work on your arms while in the car. When you get out you could go for walks or a quick jog, too. http://www.ehow.com/how_17780_exercise-car.html This site has some you can do while in a car as long as you aren't driving. They won't be total body workouts, but hey, it's something.
  • One thing that my friends would do while in the car was clench butt cheeks, or clench abs, or something along those lines for a full 15 minutes straight. Boy... they were always talking about how sore they were afterwards. They also did the whole "wall sitting" thing but on the car seat instead.

I dunno... I usually sleep in the car... so I'm probably not a huge help.
  • Why not change the trip? Plan stops to hike and explore. Find lakes to swim at. National parks to walk around in.
  • When I go on vacation I don't exercise... I take that week to be my yearly «break week» and enjoy myself. I'm cautious of what I eat because diet is 80% of the weight loss/maintenance equation, I drink lots of water, usually our trips include lots of walking... When I come back I may have gained 5 lbs but it soon comes off because it's bloat anyways from drinking ... Have fun enjoy...
