Buying Wii - what to get?

  • Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and those of you who have posted about how you love your Wii have inspired me to give it a try.

However the Wii has so many components, I'm really lost as to what I need or don't need. What games or programs would you recommend?

I'm in my forties, and have been overweight forever, and never been in shape. My weight is closer now to 300 than 200 pounds. Walking every day at this point will be too hard on my knees, as I'm on my feet most of the day as it is.

My goal is to lose weight, tone and strengthen muscles and generally - just USE my body. I don't think I ever need to raise my arms above my head or use all the range of motion I'm capable of, which means I will become very inflexible as I age.

So please, any advice or experiences you'd like to share with me will be very appreciated!
  • I use the Wii Fit Plus pretty much every day for close to an hour. It is not a heavy duty work-out but it gets you up and moving and has helped with my range of motion, balance, and stamina. And I don't get bored with it (a biggie for me as every other work out video or game type thing hasn't lasted a week. If it doesn't motivate me to get up and doing it then it doesn't matter how great it would be if I actually used it).

To use the Wii Fit Plus you need to also have a balance board and, for some of the activities, a nunchuk (the left hand's remote).

With the Fit Plus you can create a yoga and/or strength routine (mine's 22 minutes long) and I do that every day, then I do other activities depending on my mood. Many are silly (like you're wearing a bird costume and have to flap your arms to get from target to target but I'll tell you, I sure flap like crazy for minutes at a go and then go back and do it all over again) but they keep me interested.
