I didn't know if I should laugh or cry. I was out shopping with my sister in law, who is tall, beautiful, and about 5 years younger than me. My 13 year old daughter was with us also. I was in the dressing room trying some things on, and my daughter and sister in law were waiting outside for me.

I come out of the dressing room and said, of course, that nothing looked good on me, and we leave. My sister in law and daughter are looking somewhat uncomfortable. Out on the sidewalk my daughter whispers that the saleswoman was talking to them and said to her that it's so nice of her to be spending the day with her mother (thinking my sister in law was her mother) and grandmother (meaning me). My daughter was mortified! She said my sister in law was amused. I wanted to cry.

Any of you ever have a moment like that? Did you laugh or cry?

haven't had it happen, but I feel for you, I know it can't have been fun.

Can you use it as motivation - even though you aren't going to see that same salesperson again, you are going to stay on plan and get fit and healthy and young looking so that NO ONE ever makes that mistake again!

- I bet that salesperson was a teenager that was bad at guessing age!

I have not had that happen but it would have been mortifying for sure for you I'm sorry that you had to experience that

I was having dinner with my mother and brother. The cashier referred to my brother as my son. I am 10 years older than my brother !

Big hugs - chances are it was someone that is a terrible judge of ages. I know I am bad about it and don't even think about commenting unless I know!!

I've noticed sometimes it's harder to guess ages these days because girls sometimes have babies at 14! My aunt got pregnant at 16 and was a grandma in her early 30's. And my grandmother had her first kid at like 14 or 15 (was married at 13) and then had 13 kids, she and her daughters were sometimes pregnant at the same time! ha Sometimes, depending on what sort of family the person comes from, they may have a skewed view on age ranges and such. Don't take it too personal! ;-)

well, it's hard to comment because I don't know your age or what you look like LOL. If you had your daughter later in life, if you were 50+ or something, than being mistaken for a grandmother isn't the end of the world. If you're 35, then yes, ouch!

When I was 41, I went to a store and the saleslady asked me if I wanted the senior discount! I was just starting to go gray - it settled my questioning of whether or not to color my hair! Yes, I was kind of offended.

It has happened to me. Recently, fact! I have a 19 year old daughter and a 9 year old son. I have a picture of the two of them in my office on my desk. One of my employees asked if that was a picture of my daughter and my grandson. I was very embarrassed. I did have my son in my early 30's instead of 20's like a lot of people do, but Grandma?? C'mon!

I do assume my weight and the way I dress makes me look far more matronly than I would look if I were thin. Grrr...I hate it!

Oh wow.. I think I would have tried to laugh on the outside, but would definately be crying on the inside!

Just the other day hubby said to me "I don't know how old the scoutmaster thinks I am, but when I told him about the littles (what we call our younger kiddos), he said 'Wow, you have a really young family', like I look too old to have kids that young." My hubby is 31, without some facial hair looks 12.. other than the fact that his black hair is starting to show signs of kids and experience (you know some gray going on there...lol). He was very shocked that the scout master thought he was older. Our oldest is 11, then we have a 5,4 and almost 1 year olds.

I haven't had that happen yet....I think I would have been a little upset over it too!

I remember something similar happening to my mom . . . she was 36 when she had me and was often confused for my grandma when she'd pick me up in high school. I never let her on about that though.

I had something like this happen w/ me and my fiance .. we went to the library and i was signing our daughter up for the summer reading program and the woman said .. I think your son might be a to old for this it only goes to 12 and he looks about 16 .. he was 30!!! i felt like complete crap ..

I have had similar experiences...only in my situation, I was mistaken for the mother. One of my sisters was born when I was 11, and on Halloween, some lady told my dad that he had a beautuiful grandaughter. I was standing next to him, and he was holding my sister...he turned slightly green...It was kinda funny, but not really. When I was 14, my mom had my other sister, and people always mistake my mom for grandma, and me for mom when we go out. I always make a point to call either one of my sisters "sissy" or something when we are out. I do take my sisters out shopping or lunch or something every once in a while, so I always make sure they call me sissy or something.
