need food advice for a weekend yard sale

  • Saturday I'm helping out at a local yard sale benefit for our charity quilting group. It's 5:30 am -3 pm. I know that people will bring in their favorite home baked goodies, someone will drop off a couple pizzas, chips dip and all sorts of unealthy junk food to nibble on for us to eat during the sale. This is a time when I'll fall back on old eating habits, I'll be tired, hungry and among friend who are also eating all the junk.

So, I'm now on a dairy free/wheet free diet for my allergies (greatly improved). In the past I'd just pack up some cheese sticks and yogurt along with a nice salad and be happy. But since I'm going dairyless I don't have a clue what to take with me to keep myself from indulging on all these things I definately don't need.

I'm sort of in the phase 1.5, I've been on phase 1 for a couple weeks and I probably should move on into phase 2 but I know from past experience that I tend to go crazy on phase 2 and stop losing. This time I'm doing it slowly and will make a perment change to my diet so the weight will stay off unlike the last time.

    So back to the weekend-
veggies sticks with a little tub of hummus, maybe a 3 bean salad.

  • Oh I was just going to suggest veggies and hummus before I read that part on the bottom there.

I don't know the South Beach rules, but there are these snacks called almond thins, or nut thins... they're sold right by the crackers in the store, but they're made of nuts instead of wheat. Gluten free. And yummy. Definitely more filling than any other crackers too.
  • 3-bean salad for sure and maybe hummus too. Perhaps some fruit? Be strong!
  • I agree with the veggies and hummus, nuts, bean salad, and fruits. I'd also bring a lot of food- this way you can "pig out" on healthy stuff. I'd also sit as far away as you can from the foods you can't eat- and if anyone asks why you aren't eating blame the allergies.
  • I love chick pea crunchies for convenient and yummy snacks on the go. It's just one day, not worth losing ground
  • I don't have good luck with my roasted chick peas. I've tried it several times and they don't really get crispy. Once I even threw them under the broiler for just a little bit which turned out to be just a little too long and then they were crispy if I sort of picked out the burnt black ones and hey even the burnt black but not completely black weren't too bad.

I pull them out when I think they are ready but they tend to just taste like dried out beans. I guess I should let them go another few minutes but I keep thinking back to the time I burnt them and the whole house had an unpleasant smell for awhile.

  • Someone suggested turning the oven off but leaving them in there. That's what I usually do and it works most of the time. I think they need to be heavily seasoned, but maybe that's just me
  • Last time I did the chickpeas it took about 45 minutes or so. I use Montreal steak seasoning. BUT, I decided this trip that they are so crunchy they make me nervous that I will actually chip a tooth on them! (Bad teeth, much dental work.)
  • how about some lettuce wraps? cucumber/red onion salad? nuts? peanut butter and celery?

    good luck!

  • The yard sale was really good. One person offered to go get donuts and I yelled, "no, we don't need donuts. We all want to be healthy." I got a couple dirty looks and those who really wanted sweet treats ate them behind the car so I wouldn't give them a hard time. "I'm only thinking of your heatlh you know" Then I pulled out my bag of veggie sticks, hummus, bean and salsa salad. And everyone oohed and aahed at my healthy choices and a couple went behind the car and ate cookies while the rest ate my veggies. So maybe I'm starting a trend who knows. Or I'm getting a bad rep for being a fuddy-duddy when it comes to junk food.

And I'm down another pound even though I ate a little white pasta over the weekend, it had a ton of veggies and italian dressing.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions.
