Healthy Noodle Alternatives

  • I love Chinese food, and I've been experimenting with different sauces and mixes, all usually at a point or under.

However, the noodles and rice are killer when it comes to points. A small bowl is usually 300 calories or more. 6 points!

What are some good alternatives to white rice or pasta in your dishes, especially the Asian variety? Or am I going to have to be careful, portion out my noodles a little more?

BTW, my favorite dish is chicken and broccoli with noodles with a sesame or Mongolian bbq sauce! Yum!
  • My brother and his fiance have this thing called Miracle Noodles, and you can order it online. It's made from a plant and has no carbs or calories, and apparently tastes just like the real thing.I've never tried it, but they like it, so it can't be too bad.Hope this helps and good luck!
  • Miracle Noodles are pure shirataki noodles made from Asian yam root and yam flour. I've tried them, but can't say I would ever eat them again.

House Foods makes a more "Americanized" version of the shirataki noodles called "tofu shirataki noodles". They add a bit of tofu to improve the texture and flavor of the noodle. I LOVE these noodles and they are PERFECT for cooking Asian dishes. The prep is a bit different than most noodles, and they can be a little hard to find, but it's worth it! Only 40 calories for a whole bag! Check out where to find them, and recipes here:

  • I will have to look out for these and give them a try. It seems none of my local grocery stores carry House Food products. I'll have to make a special order if I'd like to try.
  • You can grate cauliflower up to make a fake rice. Mix it with a little wild rice to enhance the flavor. That's a tip from some Atkins recipes-see they get some veggies.
