  • I’m looking for support buddies who want to lose weight before trying to conceive.

I’ve been overweight my entire life and mostly sedentary. I have never made a serious attempt to lose weight before. But getting ready to have a child is a serious motivator.

Any one else in a similar situation?
  • Hi There!
I am in a similar situation, but this would be my second "trying to conceive". I have not yet lost the weight from baby #1 (she will be two this summer ), and really want to get my weight to a healthy range before trying for #2.

I have a bit more to loose than you do, but would love to have a buddy for encouragement and motivation! I keep trying to get on plan and stay there but really have been struggling with sustaining anything. Maybe a buddy is what I need.
  • I'm in the same boat as Gina. My son is 19 months old and I'm still trying to lose the weight from the pregnancy. We want another baby but I want to lose weight before trying again. I've already lost 25lbs but I want to lose atleast 30 more.
  • I am right there with you. I have been overweight my entire life. When I got married I weighed 165 and couldn't loose weight. Then it got worse and I put on the pounds getting up to 195. I was in the low 180's in March when we decided we were going to try in May or June. I had to get on the ball and eat better. Preparing for pregnancy is something tangible...something that I MUST work for. I believe this experience may finally help me get my eating habits under control. I weighed in at 172 this morning. I hope to be 165 again before conceiving.
  • Oh wow, me too! I actually have two already, 3 and 4. And I am sad to say that I gained weight after having them. After starting pregnancy out relatively fit (just overweight, not obese), then having morning sickness for the first few months, once I felt better I didn't censor what I ate anymore. After having the baby and everything settled in, I had gained a total of 25 pounds. Just 5 months later I got pregnant again, not having lost any of that weight. I am sure there are several reasons that pregnancy seemed rougher in terms of physical complaints but I am guessing that a general lack of fitness (both in terms of not having exercised and eating poorly) was a major issue.

Then after baby #2 was born, I was up another 10 pounds of real weight. At the time I was really unhappy about it but somehow after several feeble attempts at weight loss I found myself joining WW last summer and weighing in at what I weighed the day I gave birth to my son. That means I GAINED 30 pounds in the 2 years since I had him. I still have trouble believing that I let myself go like that. Serious denial there.

So DH and I are planning to go for another (he's always wanted 5 kids, but I can only tolerate so many pregnancies--this will be my last--I'm already 35 after all, and also a really cranky pregnant person). I work for a school district so I am aiming to have the baby next summer. While I work over the summer, things are a lot calmer then so I can take leave without panicking much.

So, I am trying to lose weight so I can have a healthy, more comfortable pregnancy. And I would just love to be a small person with a huge belly! I want to be able to show off my bump in a way I didn't feel comfortable in my first two pregnancies (not baring all, just wearing cuter form-fitting clothes).

So...this means that I have a bit of a deadline, this September. I've lost about 30 pounds on WW since last summer but I've been really slacking lately. I'm recommitting though, and I love this thread idea. The more reminders I get about why I need to stop making excuses, the better.
  • I soooo need this too!! We are going to try for another baby in Sept (after Disneyland of course lol) . We already have a 13 and 11 year old. I need to lose weight badly. I wanna wear all the cute maternity clothes. Im kinda scared to have another baby though. I mean, I really want one, but we are almost done!! Ya know? lol Just a few more years and we could travel and be (almost) kid free.
  • My Timeline:

I was about 250 lbs in Dec 2001 when I first started to lose weight

    Got down to 230/220.

January 2008 (when I first joined 3fatchicks) I started working at changing my eating habits b/c I new we would be TTC in the near future. I got down to 209. Then oops! In May 2008, I found out I was PG.

Had my son, immediately got down to about 215 or so.

Then began to eat mac 'n' cheese and such for dinner (too tired with newborn to care about cooking dinner!)... creapt back up to 232.

Since I absolutely REFUSE to ever get back to 250 lbs., I joined the gym in Sept. and have been slowly, but steadily, losing bit by bit.

I want to reach my goal of 170 by October, but even if it takes until the end of the year, that is OK, b/c we are thinking of TTC around July 2011 give or take.
  • I'm in the same boat. We're not preventing, but we won't start with an RE until I've lost down to 189. If I get pregnant before then, so be it, but I'd rather not be 220 upon first finding out I'm pregnant.
  • I'm in a similar situation too. I've always been overweight. I'm not sure if my stats show on the side here (I'm new at this and haven't figured out how to update the info or put up a ticker). My husband and I have been married for 2 1/2 years. I've just had my IUD taken out in March. We aren't tracking and seriously trying yet but are at the point where if it happens Great! If not, then we start paying closer attention to cycles. I have PCOS so that is going to make it harder to conceive. Also being overweight doesn't really help. Last time I got on the scale, I was 205. I'd love to be able to wear some of the cute maternity clothes you see in store. I'm not sure it will happen since I've spent most of my adult life trying to lose weight but I'm optimistic that this time may be different.
  • Hey cjdeluca, stay optimistic girl! Look at some of the success stories on this site. A lot of them lost 50, 60 and even 100+ lbs. They're no different than you. All it takes is motivation and dedication. You will lose the weight!
  • We want to start baby number 3 around Sep/Oct of 2011.
(Right now my kids are 3 and 5)

I was still overweight from baby 1 when baby 2 came along and it's just been so hard...ugh! I don't want to start baby 3 that way!!
  • I will challenge/buddy with you all too....
I am 36 and have four daughters so as you start your journey to having babies I will be going back to not having a tummy I hope!

I have 30ish to lose and am in!!!
  • Hi Caro0811,

Thanks for the support. I've tried a ton of diets out there and none have worked. After 2yrs with a nutritionist and being closely followed by a Dr that specializes in weight loss, I was diagnosed with having a very slow metabolism. Which, as we know, does not make it easy to lose weight. I'm currently trying a whole foods diet that consists of no processed foods and a lot of raw foods. It seems to be working! )

    Thanks for your kind words.
  • I need to lose for tubal reversal!
Im going to be 33 in june and my husband and I want to have a child together. The thing is we are already a blended family. I have 2 boys from a previous marriage and he has 2 kids from a previous marriage. My tubes were tied. We saved money for a reversal and Im getting it this August. Ive lost 51 lbs already and found out that I have to have a BMI of less than 35 before they will do the reversal. Im at 224 lbs now with a BMI of 36.1 and need to lose 9 more lbs to qualify for the reversal surgery. I have to be 215 to get to a BMI of 33. Im atleast thankful I had already lost 51 lbs before I found out that I had to be a certain weight for the reversal or I would have felt too overwhelmed and would have felt like it was too much to lose. I can handle 9 more lbs by the beginning of august! I want to be 200 before I get pregnant. I wont be getting pregnant until December though because we are going to Disney for Make A Wish for my son that has Leukemia. So we want to wait until we get back.
  • Hi ladies! Can I join you? I too have struggled with my weight for a long time! I am desperate to loose weight, and am very serious about meeting my goals! Just started a 10 week challenge with my sister in law, whoever looses the highest percentage weight loss wins the $200 pot. I'd love to win the money, but I want to win more for myself, I NEED this! It's been great motivation so far! I weighed 250.8 as of this past Monday. My husband and I have been trying to have a baby for 4 1/2 years and have had 2 miscarriages in that time. My Dr tells me it's because of my weight. Can't begin to tell you the heartache that comes with loosing my babies, but then to also be told it might be due to my weight...meaning...it could have been avoided?...dear God.

So here I am. Would LOVE to support each other through this journey!
