When can cocoa powder be added?

  • Where does it fall on the carb ladder?
  • Technically, cocoa comes from a bean and is in the legume family. That being said, on Atkins OWL, cocoa powder should not be added until Rung 6 of the carb ladder. There is some contraversy on this if you research different Atkins & low carb sites, some feel cocoa is a "spice" and feel unsweetened cocoa can be used during Induction. My personal feeling is, if Dr. Atkins didn't specifically include it on the acceptable foods list for Induction....its not allowed.
  • But after induction? would you wait til rung 6? im dying for some sugar free hot cocoa its negative 9 here today lol

Ok...sorry to get technical, but....when you say "sugar free hot cocoa" do you mean a pre-packaged hot cocoa mix or were you going to make it yourself and if so, what ingredients would you be using?
  • hersheys unsweetened cocoa powder splenda cream maybe some water none of that yucky pre packaged stuff lol

Ok, this is the recipe I use. It should be fine

I found this on a low carb site, tried it and really enjoyed it!

1 rounded teaspoon Hershey's Dutched Cocoa or other real cocoa powder (unsweetened)
2 cap fulls DaVinci Sugar Free Syrup of your choice. I used Caramel flavor.
    1 cup boiling water
    1 Tbsp. Heavy Cream

Boil the water. Put the cocoa powder into a cup and stir in the sugar free syrup until it makes a nice paste. Gradually pour in the water while stirring to dissolve the cocoa. Fill almost to the top. Then lighten with the cream
    Approx. 3 carbs.

  • Sounds yummy Kim thanks!
