New to the area

  • Hello everyone!! My name is Twilla and I am 30 almost 31 married to the most wonderful man in the world. We have been married for a year and have decided that it may be time to actively TTC. The problem is I am overweight even though I don't eat much and do plenty of exercise I can not seem to shed the weight. I have been doing lots of research and came across information on PCOS. I have many of the symptoms and have decided it is time for me to seek medical help. So that is the next step. What kinds of questions should I ask my doctor? If anyone has any advise I will gladly listen and absorb!!
  • I would certainly discuss all your symptoms with doc and ensure thorough lab work is done just to give you a baseline and rule out (or diagnose) Insulin Resistance, these two often go hand in hand. I'm sure your doc will check them all but I personally like to monitor thryoid and liver function, cholesterol, as well as A1c level. If you are treated for PCOS, decide if you want to aggressively treat with medications such as metformin or spironolactone which are commonly prescribed, or if you want to do things like increasing exercise and improving your diet, or both, or something entirely different! Everybody is different and something that works great for one, won't for another, so don't be afraid to ask questions and give "personal" info to your doc. Keep in mind this is NOT medical advice, just my 2 cents worth! Hope everything works out for you! Keep us posted
  • Welcome to 3FC tjsrls08, I totally agree with KaCee. Go in and get the screening done, you don't have to have all the symptoms present to actually get diagnose, in my case for example I don't actually have cyst on my ovaries however the combination of other symptoms + insulin resistance got me diagnosed with PCOS.

I've been taking bcps for over 5 years because I couldn't 'stomach' metformin and it hardly worked for me. I've recently switched to Actos and have lost 11 lbs for the first time in my life in 1 month!

If you do get Rx with PCOS get an appointment with a specialist, either an OBGYN or an endocrinologist. Explore your options for treatment and experiment, you'll eventually find something that works for you.

Good luck & Keep us posted!
