How many carbs and still lose weight

  • I am starting Low Carbing and can't seem to find the answer to how many carbs a person can have and lose weight steadily. I will be getting Dr Fred Prescatore, MD MPH book "Thin for good: The one Low Carb diet that will work for you" that is if I can find it. I did Dr. Adkins and lost 12 pounds but gained it back,,,sound familiar? I also tired the CAD but went overboard on the reward meals. So I am trying to find a happy medium. Does anyone know how many carbs I can eat and still loose? Thanks! Threads
  • The magic number lies within you (did not want to hear that did you) many peole are different but the number is dependant on you and your metabolosm. If i were you I would stick with atkins for now till you get the book you are looking for infact i would get it from the library. you may find it is not right. I do Protein Power and the new book you start like atkins but with a 30 carb limit for the day (that is minus the fiber also) and then you increase to about 45 daily, it is more the kind of carbs not the quanity if you stay low. I know many that eat 60+ and do great slow but great.

When you gained back from atkins before the reason was several fols first when you go off a low carb you need to VERY slowly introduce the carbs back in your diet, and thet is where may fall. and the second thing is that carbs will make you retain fluid when i eat carbs even an icecream i willretain 3-5 lbs for a few days so much of what you had regained was fluid and are still holding on to it. but the rest is from introducing the carbs back to fast. and we all have the tendancy to do that. carbs will breakdown to a cocaine like substance in our body and that is why we crave it so bad and when we start up again like any addict we do not do it slowly it is with gusto that we eat it and we go out of contol. so really any p;an will work it is just making sure that you eat plenty of vegies cut the starches and sugars and eat enough food, and most importantly is when you go off plan to get right back OP as the longer you splurge the harder it is to get back OP and the more you gain and the lower your selfesteem is and the more you eat and the harder it is to get back OP get the picture???

it is a matter of forgiving your self wehn you make mistakes and getting back on immiediatly this is a way of life and we will ben the rules and make mistakes if we did not then we can not live with the dietary changes and then when we fall we go back ot he old eating habits (can you tell I am jsut getting back???)

well I will get off my box and let anybody else step up!
  • Thanks for the information Nasus. I will stick to about 30 carbs till I get some reading done. I noticed that you weigh 170 now. That is where I am. How long did it take you to get your wonderful weigh loss off? My body does best on protiens,,milk and cheese it doesn't like so much(but I do) I get gas. That limits my choices on low carbing. Off hand does anyone know how many carbs cream has? Later, Threads
  • Great advise, Sue!

I was on Atkins for a while (lost some weight and then gained it all back later). I started at 28 and ended up near 60 (max on his plan). At 60 I stopped losing weight and the cravings were unbelievable (hence the regaining of the weight).

Threads -- Your best bet is to start low and add 2-3 carbs a week every other week until you see the scale slowing its decent or until you find yourself dealing with too many craving attacks.

    Good luck!

  • I actually have more to the story than munbers on the scale

start weight 235 with a body fat of 60+% Lean mass of about 90 lbs which meant that i had 145 lbs of fat on me that was in jl;uy of 2000 wearing pants of 24's

with a few falls and not eating right all the time and many months of not loosing and some of gaining I have been able to change my body dramatically I can squeeze my butt into 12's (tight) (never before seen territory) I have a body fat of 29% and muscle mass of 120 so i have gained 30 lbs of muscle, lost 95 lbs of fat, and droped from 24's to 12's

bloods are just as remarkable (can you tell I am very proud of what i have done!!! )

cholesterol is now 176 HDL 68 LDL 89 triglycerides are 98

I am heathier that i have ever been in my entire life!!!

The wonderful part of this is you can do that too. it will take time but I know it works it takes time and perserverence!!! and an acceptance of your self when you make mistakes. and great support!
  • Oh Sue, I am so proud of you!! What an accomplishment!!! Just doing the low carb for 2 days,,it scares me as I still worry about calories. Like I said dairy doesn't always agree with me (but for somereason today it hasn't given me gas and my hands aren't swelled)(could it be the flour instead of milk???). I am wondering if the cheese, cream and etc. will be a downfall. I have kept the carbs to below 30 these past two days. I wonder how often I should weigh. Thanks again for the encouragment. We are both at 170. Let's go girl!! I would like to lose 20 before the first of June. Am I being unreal with this. I know that I better get to excercising or it will never come off. Before I go, do you or anyone out there recommend any low carb bars? Thanks again!!NL
