Please point me in the rite direction.

  • I'm seriously considering going low carb. I've been low calorie and low fat for along time and need to do something new. I read the Adkins official site and a few others. But they never came rite out and said how many grams of carbs you can have and still lose weight. Does anyone know a site that gives this information or can someone help me? I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks so much.
  • I am sure you will get loads of advice but for now check out Goomba's post below "Low Carbing The Canadian Way". The best thing to do before you decide on a plan is to read some of the books on the subject. Atkins is the most strict plan - allows only 20 grams of carbs per day on Induction but there are other plans. Remember it's LOW carb not NO carb.

    Check in on the daily and get to know us. This is a strongly supportive group - and fun too!

    I agree. The first thing is to read, read, read. LC paperbacks from Sam's or from your library. But there are so many wonderful LOW carb plans available that you must find what you feel will be workable for YOU.

  • Wow! Thanks for the warm welcome! And the advice too. I'm going to the book store to pick up a few of those books. Today is my first day of low carb. I found some more info online last night and read alot of the posts here. I found myself pretty educated afterwards! Thanks again!

  • BIG welcome to you! Definitely read the books. They are a wealth of information -- there are so many to choose from that you might have to try a couple different ones to find one that is perfect for you, but it'll happen!

    I agree with the everyone. There is nothing like exposing yourself to as much information as you can and the Library is a perfect place to start. Often, the theory/philosophy behind a plan can be as motivating as all the other factors you may be considering. If I may make a suggestion: try a few recipes from the books you think you may use before you buy them. I have quite the collection and, let's just say a lot of the recipes sound better than they taste.
    There are also numerous sites that can provide valuable information offered by the individuals who are actually following these programs. I found that to be more helpful than the books and the recipes are considerably better!!!

    I did Atkins for a while and it worked well for me but I reached a point when I realized that it was unrealistic to expect that I could live that way for the rest of my life. Not what I was eating but what I was NOT eating, was the problem. The guilt and feelings of failure when I ate something I was not supposed to, sent me into binges for days (you know, "I might as well because I'm going back on Monday" routine).

    After three years I am pretty clear on what combination carbs/cals I work for me in order to continue to lose, EVEN if I have the biscuits at Red Lobster on occasion...

    Good luck to you with whatever you choose and please let us know how you are doing. I am quite new here too and have found this to be a kind, supportive and (thank goodness) wickedly humorous group of women (I am assuming it is all women)
