  • Okay, who here eats oatmeal in the morning? If you do what kind do you eat and what do you put in it? Breakfast is getting to be a trial for me. I think I'm going to have to think outside of the box about breakfast and just eat regular food. I could live on eggs, but can't do it everyday and the same with cottage cheese.

OT: I'm a cookbook freak and just got the "The Food You Crave" by Ellie Krieger and I really like it. A little disappointed because it doesn't have the sugar count, but there are a lot of really healthy and different kinds of recipes. I'm going to be making Edamame "Hummus". I love hummus and cucumbers and peppers. Maybe I should eat that for breakfast!!!!
  • I make mine the night before by using regular oatmeal not the packaged stuff. I mix mine with soy milk(lots of protein) and let it sit in the fridge overnight. I warm it up in the am in the microwave, ummm yummy! Try it before you judge
  • I eat Go Lean's Honey and Cinnamon oatmeal with clusters. I have never particularly liked oatmeal until I found this one. It is instant so it dosen't take much time to prepare. Its calorie friendly and has 5g of fiber and 8g of protein. Also, I love the " clusters" that come in it. They taste, to me, like bits of granola and they stay crunchy through the cooking process. Give it a try. I sometimes mix one packet of splenda with it to sweeten it up a little
  • I heat it up in the microwave and then add fat free milk and a little maple syrup or some all fruit preserves. You could do cinammon and splenda or raisins or fruit too or honey. I also hardboil a bunch of eggs once a week and then eat them through out the week. It's quick and keeps me full.
  • I've learned to appreciate the convenience of Quaker's Weight Control packets, cooked with water but with a splash of milk or soymilk. Evenings when I'm jones-ing for desserts that are off the program, a bowl of oatmeal with a bit of cinnamon and honey can do the trick. But I love the real stuff, especially steelcut or Irish oats. So maybe I'll try Scrappin RN's advice and make some the night before.

Thanks for the head's up on the Kashi option, Iowa Girl. If the clusters aren't made of wheat, I'll check it out.

Nanj, I've had hummus and crudites for b'fast. And sometimes I'll have an omelette orscrambled eggs on a a salad for dinner. And why not? People have hard-boiled eggs or warm steak on a salad, what's wrong with scrambled eggs? Ya gotta do what works for you.

    Good luck!

  • Hi! I eat oatmeal for breakfast about half the time. My favorite way to eat it is to make Muesli - I mix dry steel cut oats with yogurt and milk and some grated apple or pear and let it sit at least overnight, then eat it cold. Its yummy! Has great texture, instead of being mushy (which is what got me when I used to eat old fashioned oats).

If you get adventurous you can mix in some rolled spelt or cracked wheat too for a little variety. Good luck!
  • Nan - gotta tell you, darlin, that i have trouble with oatmeal. it's often just too many carbs OR i get too hungry too fast.

my suggestion: REALLY AND TRULY do go outside the box here. protein shake, then breakfast. hummus and veggies work great. rolls of deli turkey or chicken with a bit of cheese and a bit of veggies are a nice thing, too. the thing is, ya gotta eat the protein, and whatever you eat has to have some 'stick-to-your-innards' qualities so that it doesn't go straight through your pouch like a liquid.

sooo, yogurt might not work [it took me a long time to figure something out - see below]. and that's also another reason that oatmeal might not work, either. BUT, there is hope. some folks in the ladies who lift forum mix protein powder [generally chocolate] in with their oatmeal. it doesn't work for me, but it DOES work for some folks.

as for eggs, for a LONG time i made deviled eggs for breakfast, with salsa, chili powder, cumin, chipotle, and i was one happy camper. but after a couple of YEARS i got bored!

these days, i'm having a protein drink at about 7:30, and then breakfast around 9. and it's 100 calories of 2% greek yogurt [having some fat in it helps it stay with me],about 1/2 c low fat, low sugar granola, and MAYBE 1/2 banana or berries. this formula has been holding me well for awhile, but it doesn't work without the protein drink first.

keep experimenting! you'll find something that'll work.
  • hi nancy, had to go take care of my daughter for awhile so havent been posting. Just got back and admit i missed the support here. I have to agree with jiffy , oatmeal is kinda out for me, i stick to my protein drink in the morning, along with my pills.I use my bullet and mix it up with ice and maybe some flavors. I honestly believe it keeps me from getting so hungry all day long. Midmorning, i try to get in some homemade applesauce and yogurt or just yogurt to keep the thrush down. Im a real soup eater so make lots of homemade soups or chilies and they are ready when i need them... I would eat oatmeal because i really like it but im trying to count carbs and it doesnt take to many carbs and i start to gain weight again.. for now im learning how to cook fresh veggies, instead of out of a can !! Good luck with breakfast, how about trying vanilla protein drink with low carb chai tea hot , ummm good
  • Thank you all so much. I guess I've not been too adventurous when it comes to oatmeal. I will give everyone's recipe some thought. Mixing it with soy is doable; the oatmeal with the cluster, yummm. Of course, maple syrup mmmm. The Muesli recipe was interesting if I can find some decent yogart in this little burg. I will let you all know about the edamame hummus.

Jiffy: If I eat Kashi cereal in about an hour I"m starved and it seems to set the tone for the day!!!

Carvinmom: I'm so glad to hear from you. I'm sorry that you had to be gone from us, but hope that you are a lot better now. The chai tea with protein has been my saving grace here lately, especially when I'm so cold. I have been using SF Monin White Chocolate flavoring to pep it up.

    Thank you all for responding.
  • nancy - if you're hungry after eating the Kashi, then it's probably best to stay away from oatmeal, as it has even LESS protein than the kashi, and more carbs.

but keep experimenting! you'll find something that'll work!
  • Hey Nan:
My favorite breakfast is 1/2 cup of black beans Salsa nuked (cover it or Splattertastic) then topped with 1/8-/1/4 cup shredded 2% cheese
This way you get good protein good fiber VEGGIES and well I just love cheese!

Additionally you can put a can or 2 of black beans in 24 oz of salsa and cook it on the stove top to have it all together in the AM. . .also makes a great side dish!
  • Nancy,
I eat Oatmeal periodically. There are 2 Sugar Free brands that I like the Apples & Cinnamon and Maple & Brown Sugar (Meijer Brand & Great Value (Walmart) Brand). Both are 100 calories a packet, 18 carbs, 4 gr. Protein. I make in the microwave w/ 2/3 c. 1% milk. Sometimes I put a little finely chopped cooked apple or a few raisens in it for a treat. I have discovered that the Quaker Weight Loss Oatmeal actually has more carbs than the Quaker Lower Sugar Oatmeal.

My usual breakfast is yogurt (Carb friendly, No Sugar kind) Kroger Carb Master is my favorite (12 g. protein), also like Dannon Light & Fit & Blue Bunny Lite.

I never have time to eat breakfast at home, so eat in the car on the way to work or at work, so cooking is out usually.
  • I'm having a hard time finding a workable yogurt . . .Greek I love but Unless I can get to traderJoes its $$$ at my grocery
I wanted to get FF Light vanilla but the sugar was 19 grams! erm WTF?
I did like the activia but the protein wasn't so hot!
  • kier - have you considered adding protein powder to the yogurt? i do that sometimes because, well, YOU know.
  • ooh yeah I have to try that. . .I also have to convince my cheap arse to spring for Protein again. I just bid on some unjury. and I'm checking out some Bob's red mill nutrition info
