Oatmeal a Diet Food?

  • Hi,
I'm a newbie here and I have a question about oatmeal. Whenever I see weekly diet menus, oatmeal is not on the list. I really like Quaker Oats for my breakfast and I cook it with water and very little salt and add about 1/4 c skim milk at the table. Is this a good diet food?

  • Oh yes! It's a good sturdy whole grain carb.
  • Yep, oatmeal is very good. Full of fiber, filling, and tasty. Just account for the calories!
  • I hear it's a great breakfast food. But i hate oatmeal!!!
  • I make steel cut oatmeal about once a week in my little crock pot (1 quart size.) I cook it overnight because it takes to long to make steel cut oats in the mornings. After adding fruit, flax, a bit of brown sugar, and some soy milk it ends up being the same calories as my regular breakfast (Uncle Sam cereal with berries and soy milk.) I think it's a great diet/healthy lifestyle food! I've found (for me at least) that it keeps me full pretty long.
  • i was going to post my oatmeal recipe, so i decided to add it here. if you don't like plain oatmeal and/or do not want to add sugar, here's what i do: i make it like the container says and i add baking cocoa, cinnamon and sugar free vanilla syrup. taste more like a treat than breakfast. yum yum and a small amount of calories are added.
  • I add cinnamon as well--that's my own way of not having to add sugar. Sometimes also I'll cook it in soy milk instead of water, it helps adding a tad bit more taster. I don't know why it isn't listed as a 'diet' food, but all in all, I find it a pretty healthy cereal, and since it's pretty filling, especially if you add fruit to it, you don't actually need to eat lots of it, calories-speaking.
  • It is great for you - not too mention that it helps lower your cholesterol. I add Fiber and Cinnamon to mine everyday and it makes breakfast fast and healthy and pretty low cal too!
