Tricep vs. Bicep

  • For no particular reason, I happened to remember something my high school weight training teacher had said: that the amount of weight used for the triceps should eventually be the same amount of weight used for bicep workouts. I'm curious how many of you actually use the same weight for both muscles (of course the question's not just limited to those two particular muscles, but they illustrate the point best).

I currently use a set of 15 lb. dumbbells and a set of 10 lbs. I had started with a 10 and a 5 and both muscles have gotten stronger at the same rate. Is it realistic for a women to do a tricep extension with the same amount of weight that she curls?
  • I think it really depends on the exercise and the position of the rest of your body. I can do skull crushers with a considerably heavier bar than I can curl, but I can curl heavier than I can do kickbacks.

That's kind of like the statements about quad strength vs. hamstring strength. Since there is no single exercise that can be used as a measurement, comparisons ouside of a lab are difficult.

  • I train with differnt weight for tri and bi. The goal is symetry the tricep is a bigger muscle, but the bicep is the show muscle. someday I will build up my triceps.
