Making It Big

  • I got this catalog the other day in the mail and was like WOW !!!
REAL LIVE B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L PLUS SIZE MODELS !!!

    They have sizes 2 x - 7 x

    http://www.makingitbig.com/
  • They have some cute clothes! Thanks!
  • Oh my....those clothes all look like tents. I do appreciate the larger models, especially in swim suits. But I hate how companies think the only options for clothes are shapeless, huge layers of fabric. That only accentuates girth.

Well I never wore bigger than 3x so I really don't know what someone who would wear up to 7x would want or feel comfortable in. I always enjoyed wearing jeans and fitting tops but I know other girls smaller than me and bigger than me wanted less fitting clothes. There was a period in the late 90s and early 2000s that Lane Bryant had some really cute but sensible clothes. Now they've gone off the deep end thinking big girls want to bare it all. Is there a balance? It is hard to find. I think this store is catering to the larger sizes that you typically don't find in stores and to those that might not want fitting clothes.
  • Seeing real sized models for the clothes is nice. I hate it when skinny models are used for plus size clothes. You know you won't look like that but the clothes are just old looking. They remind me of stuff my grandmother wore in the eighties. Now a days plus size girls also like more fitted stuff. If actually takes of the pounds if done right. I always feel fatter in a big shirt.
  • I agree, those clothes are TENTS. Gosh I hate seeing that. I love seeing some REAL plus sized models, but geeez..Big girls wanna feel sexy too.
  • I think what has to be taken into perspective-is that this isn't the average
1X-3X plus sized store-it is a catalog where 2X is the smallest size-all the way up to a 7X. In most plus size stores-the sizes start at a 12 or 14-this store is STARTING at a size 18/20W. A woman who is a size 5X or 7X is going to want flattering clothing with COVERAGE-not short shorts and cap sleeve baby tees.
Because this store is catering to not just plus size, but also SUPERsize clothing (over 4X) they have to put things in there for younger, as well as older women-because there isn't a lot out there for those sizes.

I looked through the clothes-and some are not my taste, but I think these were lovely, and I would wear them:

Personally, I agree with nelie on her perspective. I think that some of the plus sized stores-instead of making trendy clothing MADE FOR PLUS SIZES-are making bigger clothes that are cut just like the ones for regular sizes. I am going to use this top from Torrid, for instance:

    http://www.torrid.com/store/product....10&ITEM=567465

This top is trendy, but COMPLETELY unflattering for a plus sized girl. First of all-I HATE cap sleeves on plus sized clothes. Heck, I hate them on a regular size XL sometimes. This is where the costume designer/seamstress in me (I do costume making) is going to come out. I would never design and sew a costume for someone with cap sleeves who has bigger upper arms-and most plus sized women have larger upper arms. The cap sleeve length (the shorter short sleeves like this one, and in the trendy baby tees) stop right at the fattest part of your arm-drawing attention to the flawed area. This top would have been much more flattering if the sleeves had been regular short sleeve length instead. It doesn't have to be a big tent shirt-but an inch and a half to the sleeve length wouldn't have hurt.

I think that plus sized stores should start making their trendy clothing more in tune to a plus sized figure-instead of making them exactly like regular sizes-just bigger. The sleeves should be a tad longer. The low rise jeans should be low, but not as low as the regular sizes-because plus sized butts are bigger-and your undies and crack shouldn't be hanging out, or your love handles shouldn't be "muffin top-ing" out the top of them. Plus sized bras can still be lacy and pink/red/black-but they should not have itty bitty little stretchy brastraps that will break down their elastic and dig into the shoulders from the weight of the larger breasts. I believe in looking good-but having FUNCTION as well.
Dang...I should start my own plus sized cloting venture.

Simple little things...Lane Bryant, Torrid, are you listening?
  • It's hard to please everyone, even everyone who wears plus sizes. I LIKE the clothes at Lane Bryant now. I'm 24 years old, and I want to LOOK 24, dammit! So often, all I can find in plus sizes are business or weekend clothing, and nothing in between. I like a lot of the clothes at Torrid, for example, but at 300 pounds, there's not much there I can wear without feeling like a pig. Just because it comes in a big size doesn't mean it looks GOOD on a big size...

The one complaint I have more than anything else with most plus-size stores is that their cute shirts and dresses include LYCRA. Why? Why would I want my clothes to HUG and ACCENTUATE my rolls and lack of actual waistline? I'd much prefer something "tent-like" if it helps to give me a sense of womanly curviness by sort of being bigger on top and bottom but having a sort of fake waist built into the clothing, since lord knows I don't have an actual waist of my own!
  • I'd like to chime in here. I have been oogoling the Making It Big catalog for a long time. I am a 5x and where I can find stuff to wear at Catherines, Fashion Bug and sometimes Avenue, nothing is ever long enough. At my size I have the large "apron" that hangs down. I would like to have it covered. One of the special things about the Making It big brand is that the shirts are long!! Yahhhh. But I have never ordered because $69.00 for a top is ridiculous.

But then I caved and ordered this... http://www.makingitbig.com/product/1596/8
When it came it was too sheer. Went right back. Then I ordered this http://www.makingitbig.com/product/1801/8 I missed the tiny word LINEN. I wore it anyway and by the end of the day I looked like dog poop!! That's now going back. Then I tried this http://www.makingitbig.com/product/1601/21 It looks like a tent. RETURN!

I thought I wanted long, but I guess I just want a little longer. So now I've spent almost $25.00 in shipping and nothing to show for it.

I think I will stick to shopping locally and just do it more often in a "hunt" for the right (better fitting) outfits.
  • I agree Sandi, I too have an apron and I am tall so I need things LONG! Most local stores cater to the larger shorter woman.

Its really a toss of a coin isn't it.
  • I don't like fitted clothes and I like some of the stuff I saw on this site, but other stuff looks really old-ladyish. No offence to old ladies but i am 40-something and not ready to dress old-lady just yet. FWIW my mom is 77 and refused to dress old-lady too

    But this bit stinks:

    Quote:
We accept major credit cards where funds can be drawn on a US Bank in US Dollars or gift certificates as forms of payment. Checks, Travelers Checks, Money Orders, and CODs will not be honored
How am I supposed to have a credit card that draws on a US bank when I live in canada?/ or am I missing something?

And i would hate the hassle of returns. So it's back to my miserable local hunting I'm afraid...
