Halloween ideas?

  • I started this new thread to see if anyone has any good Halloween ideas! Has anyone noticed how hard it is to find larger-sized costumes? I went through this last year. I went to a costume shop, and nothing fit. It was quite depressing. So I went as a Killer Bee. I wore a carboard "B" pinned to my shirt and carried a toy gun. Really fascinating. Everyone always seems to droll over the Playboy bunnies, belly dancers and "I Dream of Jeannie's" of the world.

I wish I had a sewing machine, then I could make something! (Although I haven't sewed since I was a Girl Scout)
  • My sister and her fiance always come up with great ideas. To this year's party he went in black leather pants a black silk shirt and a beret, drank wine all night and spoke with a french accent. She wore hip hugger jeans, pulled her hair back with sparkley bobbles and wore body glitter and pink frost lip gloss along with a T-shirt (tight white) that said "princess" - they were the princess and the frog. I really hope that isn't offensive to anyone - our parents were all born in Quebec - they thought it was very funny.
My SIL sews and one year my newphew went as Batman and my grown up brother went as Robin (an excellent costume) - so last year my sister and her Fiance used that costume and stuffed it with a ponch and wore grey wigs and went as old robin and catwoman. That was fun too.
As for me, I had fangs professionally made for me a few years ago when I was still a performing artist and it really freaks people out when you wear them with no other sign of a costume. They always double take. This year - NO COSTUME!!! Yay. The old standby - PJs, rollers and a mud mask is ready though, just in case.
    Good luck

  • The best costume I ever had was the year I was a mummy. I took an ole sheet and ripped it into strips. Then I took an old sweatsuit of my Dad'd and pinned the strips on to it so then I was really comfortable and able to use the washroom. I just made sure that I started with the bottom and then made sure the strip I put above each on covered the pins of the strip below. Then I actually wrapped my head like they do to a mummy. To make it creepy add some strategicly placed fake blood. Lots of fun. Another easy costumre is the classic Hobo. THis year we are probably going to go as the Scarecrow and Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz. It will be lots of fun and we figure we can throw our costumes together fairly cheaply.

I noticed that too-no plus sized costumes. Sucky.

Growing up we always had great costumes because my Mom is a whiz sewer. Good thing too because in Saskatchewan you always have to make sure that your costume is large enough to wear over your ski pants because it is always guaranteed to snow and be cold that day. I was a punk rocker for like three years in a row : and so she didn't have to sew anything those years-just ripped stuff! One year she spent hours making my brother into Batman and he ate so much cnady along the way that he threw up all over his costume. Now that was a memorable Halloween!
  • Well, this was probably silly ...

But I found a flapper costume at a costume shop that actually fit, so I bought it. I know I paid way too much for what it's worth, but I wanted a costume and I've always wanted to be a flapper for Halloween. So, I'll be a full-sized flapper. And proud of it, right? It's RED, too.

Of course, I'll probably freeze to death, but such is the price of beauty.

I wish I were more imaginative, or that my sister, who has oodles of imagination (she also sews) lived closer. She's going as a vampire Geisha girl. She made herself a Geisha outfit, got white face paint, etc., and is wearing fangs with it. She also made two of her friends their costumes.

But she's coming to live with me in December!

P/S Rina, my mom always made my sister's and my costumes growing up, too. They were really cool. One year, she made me a little skating outfit for my first boy-girl birthday party at Skateworld (roller rink), and I wore it for Halloween, too. It's fun roller-skating to go trick or treating! Of course, part of the time I had to wear my winter jacket. It was cold that year in Connecticut!
