Default What Would You Do

I had an interesting thing happen to me on Saturday. My DH and I went clothes shopping for me (he was trying to escape our icky house guest) and we went to Dress Barn. I ended up buying 10 outfits. It was crazy busy in the store because they were having a great sale - $5 off the first dress and $10 off the second plus a lot of Spring stuff was on sale.

When I got home, I found that the clerk that rang me up had made some major mistakes. First of all, I had a coupon for 10% off and she gave me 20% instead. Then, she didn't ring up 5 of the 10 items I bought. I didn't notice it right away because the receipt they have you sign is not an itemized receipt. I didn't pay any attention to the total either because I was too busy trying to keep my DH from dragging the dresses on the ground on the way out to the car.

So, Monday night after work I had to drive all the way back to the store. The assistant manager was in total shock. The total of the items she didn't ring up and charge me for turned out to be $199.95 -- and the store missed their Saturday sales goal by $42. Plus she had given me an extra 10% off. Can you imagine?

I wonder how many other people she gave free clothes too that weren't honest enough to come back and tell them about it.

Now, if you were that store manager, what would you do? I said I didn't want to get the poor girl in trouble and she said she would just give her some more training -- but I don't know if I believe it. I hope she doesn't get fired. But I don't know if this is the first time or not. There were tons of people in line waiting to pay and the store only has 2 registers.

Depends on how long she's been working there. I mean if she's fairly new and got flustered with a big sale and all, they should have planned for more expierenced people manning the registers or someone helping her out by bagging the clothes or something. And what a wonderful person you are. Not very many people would have done what you did.

My SIL is a store manager of Ann Taylor Loft. She has worked retail her whole life for rather large, national chains (Bed, Bath, Body; Express; white candle). Anyhow, these large chains have very definite rules about how many strikes you get before you are gone. Susan, I admire you for your honesty. Not too many people would come back for that large of a mistake. Good for you. You shouldn't feel bad about getting the girl in any trouble. Chances are if she was that bad ringing you up, she has made many other mistakes. The fact of the matter is, she is taking away store profits and by not hitting that sales goal on Sat, the manager probably lost a VERY big bonus. No that I ever wish any ill will on anyone, but if she does get fired, she probably deserves it. You didn't do anything wrong. In fact, you should hold your head high for being so honest!
