Well my favorite is Wild Oats, but since it's 20 miles away, I only make it there a couple of times a month. They have the most awesome selection of tea there. I love it, I wish they would build one closer to my town . . .
I love this place called Greenlife, I adore Earth Fare, and the local food co-op. I shop all three, because certain items are much more affordable, and others much more expensive at each. At the end of the day, I manage to spend what I spent shopping walmart or ingle's.
There's a neat open-concept market downtown with local produce and neat little shops and such I like perusing. There's one health food store here.... It's really far away, really expensive, and really not worth it
We don't have Trader Joe's in Texas.
We do have a Whole Foods Market which is nice. Usually I just go to HEB, our local grocery store because they have such a wide selection at a lower cost!
I do all my shopping at Pathmark - no fancy health-food stores for me. I find that the specialty stores and products are too expensive and easy to overindulge in. My trick is to stick to the perimeters of the grocery store and load up on natural foods (like produce, meat and dairy). It requires more time in the kitchen, but I find the cooking process to be rewarding
Ah, the other place I go that I forgot about is Bulk Barrel... I never saw anyplace like this in the US, and I love it. They have all sorts of neat flours and raw nuts and carob and sugar substitutes... Plus every herb/spice you can imagine at good prices. I just went and refilled on tahini there -- 5oz. for $2 (beats the health food store where it's $6). I also get my oat and spelt flours there (I LOVE oat flour in baking, and spelt flour is a great alternative to wheat).
We have a Trader Joe's but I actually don't go there very often. My husband used to shop there all the time before we got married but I find myself going to Henry's. It's the same company as Wild Oats that Harpo mentioned and it seems a lot cheaper than Trader Joe's. I go to Henry's for things like produce, fresh meat, and bulk items. Costco for water, bread, milk, eggs etc. And Vons for anything else.
Mocha - haha i remember Safeway! Oh how i miss living in the Bay.
Yea i also go to Henry's. It is basically where ALL the senior citizens in my town go. Do you guys have those cute little shopping carts that you push for the ones you usually carry? haahah
