I have no flexibility and I hate to be reminded of it... arch nemesis right up there with dressing room lighting. I do love it, though, and I keep going back because I need the flexibility and because it really does make me more relaxed and positive- that part I can't explain.
First of all, work on touching your toes both from a standing and a seated position. I can't touch my toes from a seated position yet. I do OK but this is really key to being able to do most of the basic poses.
I waited to buy a mat until I knew I'd go back and they were on sale at Target. (Practical, always practical) Theirs will be worn and dirty but have the added advantage of helping your hands and feet stick better. New mats can be slippery until you get them worn in. I always use two for extra cushion. Several positions start out on your hands and knees and my knees can use the help.
No baggy t-shirts! You'll have it wrapped around your head in no time with all the bending. A short sleeve fitted t-shirt works well, sleeveless is actually better. Wear yoga pants. They are the only way tobe sure your butt stays covered. I've worn sweatpants and it is not pretty to be hanging out or trying to balance on your head while you pull up your pants...
Drink water before. You will not get a break to drink during the class.
Do not do this on an empty stomach. I go at 6:30am so I try to have a small smoothie before I go. Ideally, you would wait 1-2 hours after eating a lighter snack to take the class. I did get nauseous the first time I went.
A good instructor will ask for everyone's level at the start of the class. Make sure to let them know you're brand new. They should always giove modifications for each pose. My instructor starts with the pose and then tells you the modifications so you at least try it first. Don't be fooled! The modifications are not the wimpy girl push ups we did in gym class! I stick with the modifications for most poses.
I prefer Pilates because I am strong and the poses require more flat out muscle to accomplish although you have to stretch as well. I try to combine a little bit of both.
Good luck. My first class was a struggle and I had an instructor with something to prove. I went back anyway and I really like it- different instructor now, too.
Let me know how it goes!
