Default Success using a "fat blocker"

Has anyone had success losing weight with the help of a "fat blocker" supplement (like the ingredient chitosan)? I'm a health journalist looking for women to profile in "First for Women" magazine (1.55 million readers). So if you have a success story to share, please contact me at [email protected]. Thanks and keep up the good work maintaining! -Lisa

Ummmmmmm...if you're a 'health journalist' then shouldn't you already be aware that 'fat blockers' such as chitosan are pretty much useless for weight loss??

Is Chitosan a "fat magnet"?

Effect of chitosan on weight loss in overweight and obese individuals: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials. (rather than reading the entire abstract, let's just cut to the chase and the final sentence which reads "Results obtained from high-quality trials indicate that the effect of chitosan on body weight is minimal and unlikely to be of clinical significance."

Chitosan supplementation and fat absorption in men and women. (again cutting to the chase: CONCLUSIONS: The fat trapped was clinically insignificant. For men, it would take more than 7 months to lose 1 pound of body fat. For women, no fat was trapped. This product, as with other similar products, fails to meet claims. )

So I would assume that First For Women is planning their usual cover...the Miracle Diet banner spread strategically placed next to a picture of a cake...?

Those are great links, MrsJim, they offer very helpful information!

Here is another link I was reading earlier - http://my.webmd.com/content/article/41/1671_50633.htm

Quote:
Indeed, a study published in the May 1999 issue of the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, showed that overweight people who took eight capsules every day for four weeks didn't lose -- or gain -- any more weight than those who took placebo pills.

What's more, some experts fear that chitosan may bind nutrients such as vitamins A, D, E, and K, which are chemically similar to fat, and prevent them from being absorbed by the body.

Want your body to absorb less fat? The best solution: Eat less of it. Until proven otherwise, it looks like chitosan pills may be best at absorbing your cash.

Lisa, is there any chance you might be able to run an article on diet fads and scams? You reach a lot of people, maybe you can help warn your readers about the potential dangers of quick weight loss schemes and products, and stress the importance of losing weight through a balanced diet and exercise program. Sure, it's not as catchy of a headline, lol, but at least it would be the truth, instead of offering false hopes.

Just an idea

Well said, MrsJim and Suzanne!!

THAT'S why I love 3FC so much! Wouldn't it be nice if the media did more (or any?) reports on people who've lost weight slowly, steadily, and SANELY? Y'know, by...ah...exercising and eating better?

I know, I know...there's no money in it. But maybe the Carrot Council of America could get involved or something.

By the way, I DID lose weight using a "Fat Blocker." That "Fat Blocker" was ME.

Done ranting.

Mrs. Jim and Suzanne: You rock! nuff said.

LovesBassetts: I'll joing in on marketing for the "I am my own fat blocker" line of tshirts and athletic wear.

Glory: You go girl!!!

I'm glad to see a website not succumbing to the usual bs the media pushes on us. I'm fat not stupid. There are plenty of wonderful, inspiring and courageous success stories on this site. I know they motivate me on a daily basis, and they also give me the tools I need to build my own success. There are also a lot of great stories about maintenance that are equally powerful.

Are we EVER going to realize that there IS NO MAGIC pill!!??

Yah right. I tried that with Prevention. Got a call from an editor who thought for sure my story would get in the next issue. Never happened. I got bumped for Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers and South Beach. The media's just not interested in doing things sensibly. You MUST have some fad diet, gadget, or pill associated with your weightloss or you're just not newsworthy.

My IBS is quite a good "fat blocker"

Headline: IBS helps millions across the world loose 50lbs in just 2 years!

Bella - can I get one of those shirts! "My name is Xenical" is my personal favourite!!
