Question Celexa and weight gain

Hi all. I'm trying to find out if any of you have info or experience with the relationship between Celexa and weight gain.

I've been on Celexa for about 18 months, and during that time I've gained about 40 pounds. Since I was also doing a lot of stress eating during that time, I don't know if the Celexa had anything to do with my lush new figure.

I'm trying to quit Celexa - gradually - to find out if I still need it, and wonder if that will help.

Any opinions?

Carla

I've also been taking Welbutrin for the last 6 months or so.

Hi Carla, I've never been on Celexa so I can't say but different meds effect people differently. I did a search here and there were a few posts that mention celexa, here's a few of them. Sorry I can't help you with this one.

They tell you that celexa will not make you gain weight but I believe it does for some people. There is a yahoo discussion group on celexa and alot of people there said that celexa and/or lexapro made them gain.

its all personal... i gained alot of weight on celexa and prozac but don't on zoloft.... it varies from person to person so if you're gaining weight i would think perhaps you should try another med...its not easy finding the right med, but when you do it's nice.

Thanks to Leenie, Slimcharm, Marbleflys, and Nefarious Witch. And Happy 4th of July. I read the previous 3FC posts on Celexa, and reread the product monograph. So I owe you all a lot of thanks: my question was about weight gain, but somehow I hadn't made the connection with sweating and sleepiness. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that as I reduce the dosage (very, very gradually - I'm being careful) I'll become slim, dry, and wide awake. I think I was so grateful to sleep at all after 18 months of 3 hours a night that I just assumed I was catching up!
Marble: I did subscribe to the SB newsletter, but it only started today, so I've missed the one on Celexa.

Thanks again!

April - One of my friends also lost weight on Celexa. It gave her boundless energy and cut her appetite. Didn't have that effect on me!

Hi Carla

I have been on the Celexa for almost 4 months now....in the last few weeks I am finding it really hard to get up in the morning....when I was on it last year....I had the same problem....I did have lots of energy in the 1st few months of being on it.

Last year in the spring my doctor had me gradually go off it......because I have SAD......for 6 weeks I lowered the dose....I had terrible discontinuation symptoms....just like being in a major depression...that lasted about 5 months....it was horrible....but I have had to go back on it.......have been advised to stay on it all the time.

Re. Carla49's note about sweating and sleepiness. I am tapering off Zoloft and hope it will lead to weight loss. Have had several doctors say that I am "battling" against the Z when I try to lose weight. Does not seem to matter WHAT I do, nothing is effective. I exercise 3x week, so that has helped me tone up, but no weight loss or even body fat loss.

As I am tapering off Z, I have noticed EXTREME insomnia and terrible night sweats. Has anyone else experienced this?
