Default Looking for words of wisdom.

Hi everyone. I don't know if anyone remembers me, I've only posted here a couple of times. So, I hope that you guys don't mind me picking your brain. Anyway, my surgery is scheduled for August 19th, and the closer I get the more my stomach is turning flip flops. I was just wondering if anyone has any small nugets of advice. Things like... was there anything that happened afterward that you didn't expect. What is your favorite protein powder? What brand of vitamins do you take? Is there anything that made the postop period more easy? Was the pain terrible? If you work, how soon were you able to go back after the surgery? I'm getting the RNY laproscopic. Thanks in advance for any words of advice that you can offer.

Hi Monica,
I had Lapband, not RNY, so I'm not too much help to you except that I really, really like the UNJURY brand protein powders. I use the Vanilla with all kinds of things mixed in and I also like the Unflavored. You can get it at their website. Just google it if you're interested.

I'm sure that your surgery will go smoothly and you'll be on the way to a svelte new you!

Thanks Chickadee! I'm up for any advice at all. I'm a sponge right now. I'm going to go look it up and order some. Did you ever eat baby food, anyone have a favorite flavor or brand. I didn't think to ask that last night. Does anyone know of any sites that help you know how to make mushy stuff taste good, but also digestable? And how do you liquify meat? Or do you just ont eat meat? I found a lot of stuff for how the surgery is done. What you should do after, but nothing really on how to liquify real food. Did you have a favorite recipe, or something that you really found agreeable when you started to be able to have a soft diet. The only suggestions that I got were for baby food, and not to drink when you eat. I know you have an all liquid diet right after surgery. That's easy to figure out.

Pureeing food??? how about one of those stick blenders? immersion blenders, i think they're called in the real world. easy to use,. work well, easy to clean up.

i never did the baby food. i just couldn't. i used the teeny meatballs out of the chickarina soup, and thinly sliced deli meat, after i was off liquids. cottage cheese worked well for me, yoghurt didn't [but other people had no problem with it]. scrambled eggs didn't work for me either, but worked for others.

ya gotta just take your time and be patient. if something doesn't agree with you, put it aside and try it again in 2-3 weeks.

the key: don't eat dry food. overcooked meat. use broth, FF gravy to moisten things. notice i didn't say SOUP. that's too liquidy. but a tablespoon or so of broth or gravy will make your life SO much easier!!!!

I'm with Jif on this one. I just couldn't make myself do baby food during the mushy stage. My favorite thing was homemade chili, blended til smooth over mashed potatoes. I ate lots and lots of that. I thought that pureed was the hardest stage to get through. I also pureed chicken with gravy and ate watery Cream of Wheat. Most everything ends up looking like Alpo, but you get through it.

I only pureed for 3 days, then I went to chewing very finely before I swallowed. Hey we'll see you on the lighter side soon! How exciting!

Thanks you guys. I'm so looking forward to getting this surgery done! The part I'm dreading the most, is the pureed food part. Well, that and the part where everyone in the OR will see me naked. lol. That alone has given me a couple of nightmares. At least I'll be knocked out and I won't remember it. It doesn't bother me so much that I would back out of the surgery, though.
