Wink Wednesday Chat - May 19th

Good Morning Everyone

I just love the full house we had in here yesterday

Whats everyone's wednesday look like ? I'm doing the usual, work, running errands, need to return the baby monitor I bought from babies r us yesterday, you know I should have followed my gut instinct. There was this monitor that cost $50.00, the most $$ one there, it looked nice but the company that makes it is Safety 1st. I was thinking that I really don't care for their products b/c they are cheeply made (in my opinion that is) but I bought it anyway. Well I got it home and all you could hear was "white noise" when you plugged it in, HORRIBLE, even on the lowest setting I don't know how anyone could sleep w/that noise, so back to the store it goes this afternoon. I should have stuck w/Fisher Price brand, see what happens when you don't listen to yourself !!! lol

The doctor for my therapy called yesterday to confirm that "SHE" does indeed handle eating disorders so my first appointment is Tuesday night, May 26th at 8:15 pm. I'm excited and nervous, you know spilling your guts isn't fun. For some that don't know what I'm talking about, my company will pay for 8 FREE sessions, after that its up to me but hey !!! its a start. I would like to get to the reasons why I hoard food like I'm never gonna eat again, not good foods, like junk foods. I don't mean I won't share, its quite the opposite, I love to share, sharing to me is another form of happiness along w/the eating. Its just that when I take a bite out of foods that is NOT on my "diet" "eating plan" I can't stop at that bite or one piece, I have to gorge the entire day until I lay my head down like I'm not going to get to ever eat goodies/junk food again. OY!!! I'm afraid deep issues are gonna come out, ones I don't even know exist. It will be interesting.

WOW, can I babble...........

YOUR TURN !!

Hi there, everyone! I need your help. An acquaintance of mine through church wants to lose weight. I've told her about this site, but she is too shy to come here. (go figure that one out!)
She wants to know if there is a site where she can go to and write in her meals, the amounts of the food, and it figures out the calories. She'd be happy if it tallied it up as she went along during the day. I told her that I'd ask here.

I have to phone the doc today for R. Doc has a new nurse and I think the poor child is overwhelmed. She phoned here yesterday with his lab results but didn't tell me a crucial part of it...everything but if he should continue to take one med. She forgot all about me! She hasn't told me yet if I should cut back on the blood thinner. I did anyway since it is the same one I was taing before and I can pretty much judge by how I feel.

Oh, I came across a site that might interest some of you. I haven't studied it yet. http://christianweightloss.homestead.com

Noodles - I love the middle gold ring in your picture! It will be beautiful with a sapphire stone! That is also my birthstone and my favorite color. That ring looks like the new graduation rings the girls are buying. Very pretty! CONGRATS!

April - the wedding sounds beautiful. Glad everything worked out with the flowers too!

SueMarie - yea a paycheck! wooooohooooo!

Leenie - you do not babble! I love reading your posts and I'm glad when you have a minute at work to post! I am anxious to hear about your first session with the therapist!

Tippy - hey there girlie! I was gonna suggest the same website - fitday.com - is a great place for what your friend is looking for. I hope you and R get to feeling better! what else ya'll doing around there besides seeing doctors and staying busy at church?

Sheila - WELCOME! it is great to meet you and we would be thrilled to have you join in here! I look forward to getting to know you better.

It has been RAINING for 9 days straight here. It started with 10 inches of rain one night, and then we have gotten between 3 to 5 inches every day since. We are floating over here and now they are expecting a "bumper crop" of mosquitos around here! OH BOY! NOT!!!

i'm fixing to grab my 2nd cup of coffee. Have paperwork to do (of course), need to run to Walmart and get groceries and paper supplies for the office and go walk during lunch.

What's everybody else up to today?

hugs,
cathy

Shiela of course its okay if you post here, we welcome you w/open arms I also have SAD and its the same time of year you have it. Depression does run in my family also but went undiagnosed partly b/c of ignorance and pride, years ago, in our minds, to be depressed or to be "labeled" was something to be embarassed about.... Sheeesh how stupid we all feel NOW knowing this isn't the case. Well we can't change the past but we can change the future and thank you for your nice comments, yes it did take alot for me to take this big step w/a councler.

Cathy ICK, 9 strait days of rain, boy I'd be really down in the dumps, how are you hanging in there ??? We've had august type weather here, hot and humid with rain during the night, wicked thunder storms too. Not good for one's hair

Cin, oh how I envy you, to be able to stay home.........sounds dreamy. How are you spending your days? by the pool sipping drinks ?

correction - 10 days straight! *sigh*
they said we might not get any rain today but boy were they wrong! it's pouring again!

Leenie - mood wise - I'm fine - just wish it would quit raining! can you picture my naturally curly & frizzy hair!

My hubby has a lawn service and he is going with all this rain. He is sooooooooo far behind, but can't do a thing about the weather. He says he is mowing tomorrow "no matter what" but dang, he may need skies to put his mowers on!

Better late than never right guys?

Cathy we are lucky today, it isn't raining. I am very happy for that. I am not looking forward to the mosquitos though. I know they will be really bad in about a day or two.

Leenie that you so much for the pm. Like Cin said dad's a re a big part of our lives and I am missing out on so much with him not being here. It didn't bother me at the time but I had to have my brother walk me down the isle in my wedding. I really wished my dad could have been the one to do it. I have now lived longer without him than I had him and that in itself is a really hard thing to accept. I sometimes wonder how my life would have been different had he not died.

Tip I have used fitday b4 and I really liked it. I could play around with things b4 I ate them to see what kind of totals I would get.

Liz I sent you a pm about scrapbooking but I don't know if it actually sent. Did you get it?

Morning Everyone!

Leenie – Birthday is June 30th, but my mom is one of those spur of the moment people. We were talking about her air purifier that she had bought (living air or something like that). I told her I was thinking about getting one, wanted to know what she thought of it and so on. Then, as if it had ears, the Sharper Image commercial came on and I was like OOOH mom! That’s what I was talking about LOL. So she goes, get it, I’ll pay for it. Consider it your birthday gift… and I’m like wow kewl hehehe.

My moms a haggler and I think she’s the at least on the top 10 for hagglers LOL. We don’t’ go anywhere without her if we know we can haggle. She’s our Chief Car buyer. Course you should also see her dinning room and living room. Wall to Wall with Mother of Pearl hutches that contain all kinds of knick knacks from China Town…

Anyways, there was a point to that LOL… I was on the phone ordering one when she grabbed the phone from me and asked the sales person “What do I get for ordering two from you?” She was trying to talk them down. My mom… no mercy! LOL She ordered one for my sister whose daughter, my niece, also has asthma. She had the Salesperson laughing so hard. My mom made her day. But man, how embarrassing LOL!

Tippy – Maybe if you showed her on your account how wonderful the ladies are. You know, just have her come over for a light lunch, or you go to her house. Then you can log on and show her what the board is about. She may be more inclined to do it with someone there, then to just tell her and have her do it herself. I know with me, I tend to procrastinate, but if someone is there, I tend to go ahead and do it… heheh MOST of the time.

NeverTooLate – Just jump right in! That’s how I got started. Welcome Welcome Welcome!

CIN – Wow, you sure are busy! Sounds like me LOL! It will be a well deserved break, unless of course the Domestic Goddess has to do housework *grins*

Cathyxxx – Yikes! 10 days straight of rain… Maybe send some to California. It hasn’t rained in a while, we could use some hehehe… ( I sense I may have asked for trouble ) hehehehe….

Kempy - YAY for Scrapbooking! *grins* I started about 2 years ago... and of course, I have like a million projects that are imcomplete hehehe.... maybe this summer I can finish some of them!

My day is going well. I go in early to work today tho. I am tutoring a kid in Math. Its sad, almost half the kids I know are failing Math or English. But what I don’t understand is, they don’t try… I don’t understand. This one kid says he wants to go into the Marines. Very brave of him I might add… but doesn’t he have to graduate high school or at least get a GED? I sit there in class and all he does is sit there and bug other people. I’m shocked. Then the sad thing I hear from other teachers is that, they gonna pass most of these kids to high school anyways. It’s just going to get harder for them…and most of them already are fed up with the frustration… sigh… it’s rather depressing. I offered to come into work early for this one student to help him with math only if he really wanted the help. Because this is an hour before work which I do not get paid for so I hope he is truly looking to better himself. I told him I am more than willing to help him. So we shall see what happens today.

As far as weight loss, I think I'm doing great. I use fitday.com to watch what I taking and it seems like I can really control my calories at 1600. Though I have gone over but never by much. My aim now is to lower that to 1500 and slowly work my way down. One big goal I need is to GET MORE ACTIVE!!! AHHHH! It just seems like I never have time to do anything. Now with working, I am getting a little behind in my school work. I bowl league tho, so that's something... plus I don't take the elevators anymore, I use the stairs. Okie well except for that class on the 3rd floor hehehehe I haven't gotten to taken the stairs for that just yet LOL

Boy, I think I was the one babbling this time

Okie, I know i just posted *grin* but I wanted to share this with everyone and get some feedback on it...

I wanted to share some information I read about “ZigZag” Dieting. I think this info really makes sense, especially because I do “overeat” even though I try to stay at my 1600 calorie mark. RalphMarie from April Chicks gave me permission to quote this…

Quote:
Check this out if you're thinking that you've blown it with the calories. It explains how you HAVE to eat to keep your bod burning calories and if you go too low everything slows down and stops. Make sure you sroll all the way down and plug in your current weight.

http://www.naturalphysiques.com/tools.php?itemid=64
I know that when I went to this link it didn’t make sense to me but when she explained:

Quote:
If you weigh X amount of weight it takes X amount of calories per week to maintain that weight, any amount of calories less and you will lose weight, as soon as your body realizes that you have dropped down in calories a reajustment will occur and it will stop losingas fast and go into a "famine" mode thus thinking that times are lean and it needs to hold on to the fat it has...thus you raise the calories slightly the following week and you start losing again. This is called "zig-zagging". You never go back up to the full starting X amount to maintain your previous weight. This is why if you're going to start at 1200 a day,you should occasionally eat over this amount, especially if you hit a plateu.
It made sense to me. I can see how your body can think it’s loosing out and will slow down.

I just thought I would share this with you guys… I thought it was a great explaination. Any comments on this?

Sue…

I have to try to stay up all day for the next 3 days and get to bed at a decient time on Friday night because I have a tournament to judge Saturday and if I don't get enough sleep, I become a brat! That's not good when theres a bazillion screaming kids running around.

Hi there,
Just saw the calorie cycling post and wanted to pop in with a quick comment. Calorie and carb cycling are great, well tested methods of losing weight as long as you really pay attention and track your calories. BUT for anyone who weigths over about 115 pounds, 1200 calories is way to low a number as your average target. For the method to work, you need to dip below your target by at least 20% for 2 days a week, and that's just not enough food for anyone. Even with minimal exercise (which I don't advocate), with the numbers you posted in your signature, you should be able to start with a target of at least 1800 calories and lose a significant amount of weight. Starvation mode level is dependent on individual energy requirements, not a set number.

Calorie cycling is a tool used a lot by bodybuilders trying to lean out- it works!

Hi Mel...

I was wondering who you were talking to? And also wanted to know if you could explain the carb / calorie cycling a little bit more for me. I found teh zigzag info to be great help, and your info sounded good as well so I wanted to get more info on it...

Thanks...

Hi SueMarie,
Yup, I'm the same Mel from the Maintainers' Forum and Ladies Who Lift. I guess I was posting to you since you are the one who posted the calorie cycling link. My main concern was that 1200 calories is way too low for virtually anyone, and I was afraid that you were talking about using that as a starting number.

I know the trainer whose site you were looking at. His name is Jeremy Likness, and he really knows his stuff. His calculations are taken from a plan called Leanness Lifestyle by David Greenwalt. I used it very sucessfully to lean out, but I was ready to gnaw my arm off most of the time. Jeremy (and I) are hardcore weightlifters, and the diet is really aimed at people who are lifting. But even without that, calorie cycling or calorie cycling combined with carb cycling works. It's generally used by bodybuilders to strip off the last 10 pounds.

He explains it pretty well on his site: whatever your target number of calories for weightloss, you should vary it above and below that number a few days each week so that you body doesn't just get used to a certain level of calories and adapt to that. For example, if your target is 1800 you could have a schedule that looks like this:
Sunday: 1800*1.2 = 2160 calories
Monday: 1800*0.8 = 1440
Tuesday: 1800*0.8 = 1440
Wednesday: 1800
Thursday : 1800
Friday: 1800*1.2 = 2160
Saturday: 1800

If you ate 1800 calories each day of the week, you'd have consumed 12,600 calories. If you cycle with the sample schedule, you'll still eat 12,600 over the course of the week, but you'll keep your body guessing about what level it's going to get fed so your metabolism doesn't reset itself.

Carb cycling works exactly the same way. whatever the number of carb grams you decide is right for you, you then vary them through the week so that your body does not get too used to any specific level.

To be honest, these are ways to trick bodies into shedding fat down to very lean, competitive bodybuilding levels. At your weight, I think a sensible eating plan and some exercise should take you a long way before you need to try this. It does help if you hit a plateau, tho.

Hope that helps,
Mel
