Default walking for weight reduction

Want to tell about my walking experience and see if there are any walkers out there.

I never was much of a walker -- always used the 'excuse' that it hurt to much in the joints -- really not an excuse because it did.

After my cancer surgery on September 7 2000 I still did nothing about my weight and definitely did not do any kind of walking

But on January 2 2002 I had made a decision to get up and get moving. Our city had built a new complex that consists of an olympic indoor pool with water slide and wave pool and also a hockey arena -- with a nice sice concourse. So there is no excuse re weather for not walking -- it is heated in the winter and air conditioned in the summer.

On the door to the hockey arena it states how far around it is when you walk the concourse -- 820 feet when you do 1 lap; or 6.5 times around would equal 1 mile.

I started my walking on January 2/02 -- it took me about 12 minutes I believe to get around it due to the pain and not being able to breath properly. I cried the whole time due to the pain. After I walked it I sat down to rest before getting up and walking another 500 or so feet to the car. But I persisted and continued to go and walk every morning that hubby was not out on the railroad working. By April 24 2002 I was walking 1.25 miles each time out.

As of May 25, 2003 I had walked 575 miles!!!! Not bad for someone who couldn't walk 500 feet without great pain. I then took time off from walking -- till July 10 due to having to travel for radiation treatment.

I started up again on July 11 2003 but only went walking 12 days in July as the side effects from the radiation were still pretty bad.

In August I believe it was 23 days I walked and my total miles walked is now 617.75

So are there any other walkers out there -- how about we keep a track of just how far we walk as a group!!

NOTE; Could anyone tell me how I get to show that I have a journal -- some of you have the 'journal' shown under your avatar -- don't get it how you got it there -- I have started keeping a journal and would like to have it linked with all my messages -- if you can help with this it would be appreciated

Someone just asked this on another thread, here was my answer:

Go up to the top of the screen, there is a button that says "User CP", that is how you get the weight under your name (which is called your signature) & your avatar & your profile.

Your journal, well...the ones under our names are the old ones. The link to the new ones is at the top of the page. I have put my new journal link in my signature for convenience.

I walk 2 miles a few times a week. We can log that in the weekly exercise thread.

Hi Sprout! Nice to have a fellow Canuck and fellow walker on the board. I try to walk 15k every week. I'm lucky to have a wonderful trail system right across the road from my house that has lots of bridges, stairs, low hills and beautiful natural scenery that I use all year round (well, except when the snow drifts are too high). Now that my favourite walking season is just around the corner I'm looking forward to more vigorous walks (when it's too hot and humid I slow right down). There's markers along the trails to gauge distance and enough different trails that I don't get bored (mind you I've gotten lost a few times)

Hey, I have an idea...if you start walking east and I start walking west, we could probably meet up in Saskatoon for a coffee at Tim Horton's by next summer

Default Updating my walking chart

Well I have walked again today -- 1.25 miles for today September 10/03 So here is how my chart updated

January 2 2002 to May 25 2003 = 575 miles

July 2003 = 12 days in month I walked = 12.25 miles walked in month Total miles now come to 587.25 miles

August 2003 = 23 days in month I walked = 27.25 miles walked in month Total miles now come to 614.50 miles

September 2003 = 5 days so far this month = 5.25 miles walked so far this month Total miles as of today (September 10) come to 620.25

I am charting my walking starting from Vancouver BC Canada. From Vancouver to Cochrane Alberta is 607 miles so I am that far and am between Cochrane Alberta and Calgary Alberta. Need about another 20 miles to get to Calgary -- so reach there by the end of September hopefully.

Does it count if I'm doing Walk Away the Pound tapes or do I have to be outside walking?

Crystal, just as long as you are walking -- best type of exercise that I have found as we all can do it, cost nothing.

i walk about 5 miles a day in work so i don't walk much outside of work. that just a guess though i really need a pedometer thingy to see. i know how you feel walking through pain. i dislocated my ankle last december and 2 days later i was trying to walk on it. it took me about 45mins to walk 800 yards i was almost in tears all the way.
