Default Colonoscopy prep?

Good morning all; sorry to bring up a topic such as this (I know it's TMI!). I met with a GI doc last week to schedule this test, and the nurse went over the prep with me. There is a day or so where I have to take clear liquids; she suggested broth and ice pops as well as ginger ale. My first thought was, "what about ketosis?!". I guess that's a good sign, when I'm more worried about the program than I am about the prep ;-)

Any suggestions for 0-0-0 clears that will work? Thanks in advance!!

OhJuly,

I've done the prep and had the same procedure. Trust me, it will not knock you out of Ketosis, but get you reaquainted with your bathroom!

This is a medical procedure and you should follow the prep instructions exactly. If you need anything, just try water and broth if you need it. Try the prep in the evening so you don't need to worry about it. Be sure to watch the water intake and the restriction on when you need to stop liquids.

Hi ohjuly7878. Sorry to hear you are prepping for this! Not fun!

I had one in May and was doing IP at the time. I don't think there are any IP products that qualify as acceptable for prep. I tried the pink lemonade which was tasty but in the end not clear. Not sure if there are some alternatives that might work (some of the syntax nectars??). I was not allowed anything with red dye in it - not sure if you have this same restriction...

I did have some broth as well as Mio flavoured waters (including soda water) but in the end also allowed myself some popsicles and ginger ale as well as a few lollipops (supposed to help with the flavour of the prep liquid). Because there are some carbs in the food that we eat even while on IP, I figured I wouldn't come out too badly in the end. I also found the prep so unpleasant that I needed some comfort (ginger ale) and it was something I felt I had to do so if it kicked me out of ketosis, so be it.

I got through my two days and the procedure and then treated myself to a big quarter chicken dinner at Swiss Chalet. Interestingly, after the afternoon of the second day, I wasn't even hungry anymore.

Hope all goes well for you! Good luck!

I went through this as well. Remember you wont be eating anything for a day except clear liquids. Most people I know stick with green or yellow jello (since you can't have red or purple dye either). So just forget about IP for that prep day and follow the prep instuctions. I actually went ahead and ate sugar jello since I needed some calories, and sugar free jello would have given me near 0 calories for the day which is equally bad. i found I lost weight anyway on that day and the day after. I doubt you'll be able to eat more than 1000 calories of jello for that entire day so you will still have a calorie deficit. I suppose to be more in the flow of IP, you should eat sugar free jello, however I was worried about getting too weak. But if you do try that let us know. Bottom line, dont worry about it. Do the prep, get the scope, then get back to official IP. I bet you'll lose weight through the whole thing.

When I did my colon prep I used sugar free Powerade or Gaterade (it was 4 years ago so I'm having trouble remembering what brand it was). I also used sugar free jello & chicken broth. The broth gave me some calories & the sports drinks gave me some electrolytes.

And I found only having ginger ale caused for a lot of acidity and a real pain in the butt if you catch my drift! Stick to plain water or Gatorade as others suggest.
