I just went online and checked the calories for the Starbucks bagels, muffins and pastries I've been having a couple of times a week after my 6 a.m. workouts, and everything's about 50% more than I had estimated! Quite the eye-opener. I don't think I'll be continuing the habit from now on. Have any of you had any similar nasty surprises?

but anyways, i used to get starbs like, everyday or almost every day. even for the first 70 lbs of my weight loss or so, (im talking the grande-skinny-lattee) type stuff.
now, i RARELY have a tall latte, and it's a huge treat. i haven't had one of their delicious choco-croissants in forever.
although,from what i remember calorie wise the turkey breakfast sandwich and the spinach wrap are okay colorically! as well as the yogurt!
They don't list the calories right there when you buy the stuff? Or are their counts really off? I don't really go to Starbucks at all, but whenever I'm there they have the counts listed for each item.
I guess I'm spoiled since here in NY they have to list the calorie counts at a lot of these places.
TBH, I don't think I've ever had any nasty surprises because of the above reason (places having to list calories). I fully knew what I was eating most of the time and I chose to eat it anyway.
I have a skinny grande latte if I just came in from a long ride, but otherwise oatmeal (sugar, fruit, and a few nuts) and a coffee or tea. It's doable I always go in knowing what I'm ordering though.
When my youngest was a toddler, he was losing weight at a rapid rate. We got his weight up on a steady diet of, among other things, Starbucks blueberry muffins (he called them MOMO. OMG so funny, he was like 19-20 months, walking into starbucks, getting his milk and walking up to the counter and saying MOMO! And they knew what it was!
If I'm ever on a road trip and need to get a quick bite, I always look for a starbucks because I LOVE their Spinach, Feta & Cage Free Egg White Breakfast Wrap for 290 calories. It's delicious in a pinch!
I frequently go to Starbucks because it's the only place in my town that makes the coffee strong enough for me. I've always known the calorie counts for their foods mainly because I went out of my way to find out (although after the fact I saw that they have put out a brochure w/ nutritional info that is left out on the counter). Some of their foods are worth the calorie splurge once in a while and some aren't. The thing I like, though, is that at least I know the nutritional info because they have it. When I go to some other, local, places, I have to guess.
Hey there, I work at Starbucks! Or I do now; I'm leaving soon. The single biggest contributing factor to me gaining so much weight this past year was that at the end of the night, we "mark out" expired pastries, sandwiches, etc and the ones we don't donate, partners can take home. Which I proceeded to do after every shift, to the tune of thousands of calories worth of lemon pound cake, scones, muffins, etc. It was a mess. The first thing I did when I started losing weight, was v. v. srsly tell my fellow partners to slap my hand if I tried to take home anything from now on. They were very supportive.
Nowadays, the only things I eat from work are:
1. Breakfast sandwiches - Reduced fat turkey bacon sandwich, and spinach feta egg white wrap
2. Lunch sandwiches - Ham & Swiss panini, which is actually not that bad (350 calories & 9 grams of fat)
3. Plates, etc - the fruit cup, and the chicken & hummus plate.
Everything else has too many calories, fat or sugar, and/or is a "trigger food". That includes the yogurt, which seriously has like more grams of sugar than a Snickers bar.
The only drinks I have now are:
1. Plain coffee with half & half and splenda
2. Skinny lattes, sometimes with sugar-free syrups (around 90-150 calories, I think?)
3. Americanos with a little bit of milk
4. Unsweetened iced or hot teas
It wasn't at Starbucks, but I had a scary calorie find a few years ago. I got an Arby's chicken salad Market Fresh sandwich. With the whole grain bread, chicken breast, and grapes, I thought it was a good find. I almost choked when I returned home and found out it was over 800 calories. For ONE normal sized sandwich. Devastated. Live and learn, though.

I hear you! I went to a Grizzly's once and didn't look up the nutrition info first. Figured I couldn't do too much damage with a grilled chicken wrap. Wrong! It was about 1000 calories!
Since we're swapping calorie-shock stories . . . I occasionally eat at Bonefish Grill when I can (I really like it, but there isn't one in my area). They do not publish their nutritional info, but you can find some of it on various sites on the internet. Anyway, my regular dinner there was an order of Bang-Bang shrimp and a salad. I thought I had seen that an order of BB shrimp was 450. Well, imagine my surprise when I learned that that calorie count is for only 1/3 of an order. So the real damage is more than 1300 calories. Yeah, I was ticked. That pretty much eliminates that from my menu unless I have A LOT of calories to spare.
