it all can be quite confusing in the beginning but just move around the website and you will find all kinds of helpful information. I myself am not much of a cook so i don't follow recipes much, so basically i just calculate the food I eat. You absolutely do not have to use those extra weekly points and alot of people don't. I usually use them towards my after weigh in day to go towards a little something special, maybe dinner at a restaurant or a dessert.
I try never to deprive myself, because I know if I do, I will fall off the wagon.
The biggest bonus I love about the points plus is fruit is 0, mind you I don't go overboard on it but it gives me that little extra something everyday.
