Default Style Preference Changes when Smaller

I guess the title makes this sound kind of "duh," of course we want to wear more flattering clothes as we get smaller, but I've been noticing this on a new level lately.

I was never very girly. For one, I had low self esteem, so my daily wardrobe consisted of either t-shirt and jeans or t-shirt and a hoodie. Definitely not cute. But even when I was browsing through magazines, browsing stores, or noticing what I liked and did not like on other people, I was much more drawn to plain and simple. No ruffles, sparkles, frills, loud patterns, anything excessively trendy, etc.

Well all of a sudden....hehehe...

I want bling, I want lace, I want ruffles, I want to be up on the trends. A bright pink trenchcoat? Bring it. Although I still have the basics in my closet, when I'm out shopping, I'm turned off by a plain simple t-shirt. I want it to have some kind of pizazz.

It's gone way beyond wanting more flattering and fashionable clothes on my new and improved body. I've completely developed my own sense of style. I've gotten the courage to wear much bolder outfits, and I'm having fun with it. I used to wear frumpy jeans and a frumpy t-shirt. I WISHED that I could wear non-frumpy jeans and a non-frumpy t-shirt. Well now I want to and do wear fashionable jeans, knee-high boots, a bright ruffly top, and a figure-flattering jacket. My plain jane preferences went completely out the window, lol.

Anybody else notice that you're not only drawn to more flattering clothes, but completely develop your own unique and more bold style?

I am still in the frumpy mode, but I just wanted to say that your post is very inspiring. I can't wait to go to the store and ENJOY trying on clothes. I went shopping for a plain white buttondown for work and was bummed when the Large looked like my boobs were gonna bust out. The extra large would be too big. I want to be back in a medium and I know I could find tons of choices.

Thanks for the lovely encouragement.

You know, I was just thinking about this today!

I don't wear frumpy clothes necessarily (well, usually), but I do dress very simply. I try not to sparkle, shine, or glow, basically. Which, I was thinking earlier, why the heck not? I've been checking out more 'out there' outfits recently, though I haven't bought any. I don't feel small enough to pull them off yet.

I just broke into the normal weight bracket this week (OMG, yay!), and so I'm starting to really look forward to getting rid of my last ~30 lbs. Another reason I haven't bought trendier stuff I think I'll love is I don't want to shrink out of it too fast. I dropped 2 jeans sizes without my knowledge in 15 lbs, so I don't want to buy an adorable top and then lose it. And I know I won't tailor anything.

One kind of outfit I'm DYING to wear is a cute slender coat with buttons on the front, nearly-knee-high boots with heels and skinny jeans, or the coat, cute heels, and those down to the calf, stretchy leg warmers. Could NOT pull that off now. Some day, though!

Great thread!

I'll be wearing slinky black clothes until the day I die, hehe. I find that since losing weight this time around I am much more drawn to micro-short, super tight and...plainer. I think I focus more on details and things when I'm heavier to draw attention away from my bodily flaws. When I'm thinner, I'm happy to prance around in a T-shirt and jeans.

I once was a sweatpants/hoodie
type of girl. Now, give me a
figure-fitting dress and some heels!

i'm really surprised how my taste is changing too. i'm ecstatic to give away my too big clothes. clothes i had years ago and saved, used to love, but now, eh? i'm surprised most of the time i don't care for them.

i just recently got into some sizes that are close to my goal, whatever that is, lol. i know that my legs won't get alot smaller, just slimmer. so i will probably still fit into 12's (in jeans) pretty well even at goal. so i've gotten a few pairs of nice looking jeans, good will, score! lol. and a few sweaters that give that younger slim look. like sweaters, but they have hoodies, or veritical lines, or v-neck. not so boring like all my clothes in the past.

i'm really excited to start building a wardrobe that i really like, not just, wearing it because it was the only thing that fit. so i have those jeans and sweaters, a leather jacket, and puffy white winter coat. other than that..not much else. workout clothes. so i'm excited to browse online thinking and learning about what is flattering. what is my style? i think i like more modern styles, when i was a teenager i liked flower designs. i've always liked sporty, or jeans and t shirt. i think i just want to glam it up a little now. then take that knowledge, and find a flattering outfit at goodwill. untill we have some money again. i still have no idea what stores i even like lol.

My sense of style has always been girly and trendy, but I never feel comfortable wearing it at a heavier weight. So, for me, I only appear to have changes in my style, but it really comes from being able to find things that fit and look ok when I'm heavier and not my actual sense of style changing. I've always loved fashion.

I used to look for clothes that made me look thinner...now I have the opposite problem - trying to give myself some curves! LOL! And yes, I'm much girlier and stylish where as before, I had convinced myself that I "didn't care" about all those materialistic things like fashion.

I was the same way....dressed in jeans, hoodies, and t-shirts. The weight loss has sure changed the way I dress and clothes I select. Going from a vanity sized 12 to a junior size 0-3 is a major difference. I love black and gray now. I never liked leggings or boots before--but I love them now. I never realized all that I missed out!

Thanks guys, I'm glad I'm not the only one

I went shopping yesterday, and it really just blows my mind how drastic my style has changed. I am so drawn to "statement" clothes. Nothing too obnoxious or "weird," just bold and fashionable. What a surprise, I never knew I had it in me, hehe.

My next girly girl obstacle to tackle is makeup. I know how to do foundation and powder. I know how to do mascara, I think I do eye liner right (though rarely use it). And I'm pretty handy with some lip gloss, haha. I'm going to go to Wallyworld and get a few more adventerous colors and palates and products. Shimmery gold eye shadow and a white eye liner for the corner of my eyes are two in particular that I want to try. Again, I don't want a clown face, but I want to play with it a bit to find a few looks. I'll get the cheap drugstore brands while I play with colors and looks and then build up a decent collection of nicer brands over time.

This thread has been very inspiring for me. Megan, try ULTA or Sephora, their reps can help you find a few great makeup looks.

You are absolutely right! I never thought about it before, but as I have gained weight my clothing has gotten less cute, and ornate. Hmmmm... Looking forward to going back to some cute clothes in the near future!

Oh honey I am with you.
Bring it on, fashion. I've put a moratorium on clothes purchases until I'm near my goal weight--- only 15 lbs to go (!!!) and have been saving with the goal of a serious splurge-fest shopping spree this Spring.
As that jackpot goes up, and the weight comes down I'm clipping magazine looks, saving make-up tips, thinking about new hairstyles, obsessively watching What Not to Wear on TLC.
Working in New York, it's completely normal to put on those stilettos and head to the office..... and I'll be right there with those ladies limping around the streets, all in the name of fashion.
When we lived in LA, everything was SUPER casual and I got lazy...and larger. Time to vamp it up again and bring back some glamor!
